Which seat height fits your counter?

26 in for most islands.

Most kitchen islands take a 26 in seat and most bar counters a 30 in seat. If your counter falls outside both ranges, our steel stools can be made at any seat height from 18.1 to 35.5 in.

With a back or without?

Our rule of thumb: a back for sits over about 20 minutes.

As a rule of thumb, choose a backrest if you sit for more than about 20 minutes. Backless stools slide fully under the counter, which suits quick breakfasts and small kitchens.

Oak for warmth, visible grain and a frame you can refinish. Steel for a slim line, more frame colors and custom heights.

Vegan leather wipes clean, velvet hides wear, bouclé feels warmest. All three are above the 30,000 Martindale rubs usually specified for commercial seating.

Steel is cut, bent and welded, oak is machined and joined, and seats are upholstered by hand. Only the raw materials come from suppliers.

Tested by RISE, Sweden

EN 16139 is the European strength and durability standard for non-domestic seating. RISE tested Bruno to level 2 and Philip to level 1, and assessed Freja and Svea as meeting level 1 on the basis of that testing. Separately, we rate every stool for 440 lbs.

What height bar stool do I need?

Measure your counter to the underside of the countertop and leave 9 to 10 in of legroom. A 26 in seat fits a counter of 35 to 36 in; a 30 in seat fits a bar of 39 to 40 in.

What is the difference between counter stools and bar stools?

Height. A counter stool has a seat of about 26 in for kitchen counters and islands; a bar stool has a seat of about 30 in for raised bar counters. Most kitchen islands need counter stools.

How many bar stools fit at a kitchen island?

Divide the seating length by 21.5 in and round down, or by 19.5 in for slim stools. A 47 in island seats two, 71 in three and 94 in four.

Should I choose bar stools with or without a back?

As a rule of thumb, with a back if you usually sit for more than about 20 minutes, for meals, homework or work. Backless for quick breakfasts and small kitchens, where the stools slide fully under the countertop.

Can you make bar stools in a custom height?

Yes, on our steel models Freja, Philip, Bruno and Svea, welded to order in Malmö at any seat height from 18.1 to 35.5 in. Our oak stools come in 26 and 30 in.
