Spacing is what decides whether a row of bar stools feels sociable or cramped. Too close and every meal involves elbows and chair legs; too far apart and conversation happens across gaps. The rule of thumb is simple once it is measured the right way, from the center of one seat to the center of the next, because that is the figure that works regardless of how wide the stools are. This guide gives the spacing for standard, slim and wide stools, the gap to leave between seats, how close to put the end stools to the edge of the island, and how much floor to leave behind. Every figure is in inches, with the spacing for each by Crea model.

How far apart should bar stools be?

As a starting point, space bar stools 21.5 in apart, measured from the center of one seat to the center of the next.

Top view. Four standard stools with 17.7 in seats. The dashed lines mark the center of each seat: 21.5 in between centers and 11 in from each end of the island, which leaves 4 in between the seats.

That gives each person room for their elbows and lets them get on and off without moving their neighbor. Slim stools with seats of about 15.7 in, such as Svea, Eva, Ebba and Freja, need only 19.5 in; seats over 19.7 in wide need 23.5 in.

Measuring center to center is what makes the rule work for every stool. Mark the centers along the counter edge with tape before the stools arrive and you will see immediately how the row will feel. What sets the spacing is the overall width of the stool, not whether it has a backrest or armrests.

How much gap should there be between bar stool seats?

Leave about 4 in between the edges of neighboring seats.

That is what the recommended spacing gives: 21.5 in with a stool 17.3 to 18.5 in wide, or 19.5 in with a slim stool 15 to 16.1 in wide. In our experience, with less than 3 in people brush arms; with more than 8 in the row starts to feel sparse.

The table gives the spacing we recommend for each of our models and the gap between seats it leaves.

How far should the end stool be from the edge of the island?

Keep the center of the end stool at least 11 in from the end of the island, which is half the 21.5 in allowance.

If the end is closed by a wall or a tall cabinet, add 4 in so the person on the end is not sitting against it: 15 in from the center of the seat to the wall.

In practice, that means an island whose seating side is a multiple of 21.5 in fits its stools exactly, with the spacing between stools and at the ends already included. Our guide to how many bar stools you need has a calculator that applies the same rule to your island's length.

The rule: allow 21.5 in of counter edge per stool, 19.5 in for slim stools (Svea, Eva, Ebba, Freja), 23.5 in for the wide Carl, and 4 in more for each end closed by a wall.

Do stools with armrests need more space?

Not because of the armrests: the width of the stool decides. Bruno measures 18.5 in across its armrests and fits at the standard 21.5 in.

Armrests are often the widest part of a stool, so measure across them, not across the cushion, when you compare widths.

Carl, our oak stool with armrests, is our widest stool, 21.3 in across the armrests, and we recommend 23.5 in for it, or 25.5 in at an island where it is used every day. Swivel stools, which we do not make, also need extra space, because the seat turns into the space of the next stool. Read more in swivel vs fixed bar stools.

How much space do I need behind the stools?

We recommend at least 35.5 in of clear floor behind the counter edge if nobody needs to pass, and 43 in if people walk behind seated guests.

That is enough to pull a stool out, sit down and, in the wider case, let someone pass without everyone standing up.

Side spacing and space behind work together. A tightly spaced row with little floor behind feels crowded even when the numbers on paper are right, while a generous clearance behind makes 21.5 in spacing feel roomy. The kitchen island seating guide covers all the island measurements in one place.

How far apart should stools be at a bar or restaurant counter?

As a rule of thumb, allow 21.5 to 23.5 in center to center at a bar or restaurant counter, and 23.5 in or more where guests stay for long meals.

Commercial counters usually see more coming and going than a kitchen island, and guests who do not know each other expect a little more room.

In busy places, the space behind the stools matters as much as the spacing: allow at least 43 in where staff and guests pass. Our guide to commercial bar stools covers the other requirements of hospitality seating, including strength testing.
