How to Choose an Outdoor Chaise Lounge: Length, Backrest, Teak or Aluminum

Short answer

Length
77 in
Height
13 in lying flat
Backrest
four positions

Choose a sun lounger by length (Bazo is 77 in), height (13 in lying flat), a backrest that locks in fixed positions, wheels if you move it, and a frame that cannot rust. Teak on stainless steel is heavier than aluminum but stays out all year and stays cool to the touch.

Sun Lounger Bazo with a black frame and teak slats, three-quarter view

A sun lounger looks simple: a frame, a lying surface and a back that tilts. The differences show in the second summer, at the joints, the back mechanism and the cushion dye. This guide goes through what to check, in the order that matters: what kind of lounger you want, its size and height, the backrest, the material, the cushion and how you will move it. We make one lounger, Bazo, and say plainly where something we do not make is the better fit.

How to choose a sun lounger: lounger, deckchair or day bed?

Start with the job. A sun lounger lies at full length on a fixed frame, with a back that tilts from flat to upright: for a whole afternoon. A deckchair is a folding frame with a fabric sling that you carry out and put away: for an hour on the lawn. A day bed is wider, often with a frame overhead.

We make the first and the last. Bazo is the single lounger. The Bazo Day Bed is 62 x 79 in with a canopy frame 79 in high. We make no folding deckchairs: if it has to fold into a cabinet, buy one of those.

How long and how high should a sun lounger be?

Long enough that your head and heels are both on it, and high enough that you can get up without a struggle. Bazo is 31 x 77 in overall and 13 in to the slats lying flat.

13 in is low: comfortable lying down, not the easiest to rise from. For someone who finds low seats hard, a garden lounge chair such as Kenny, seat at 15 to 19 in with arms, does the reading-in-the-sun job better. Our garden lounge chair guide compares them.

What should the backrest do?

Lock. A back that holds in fixed notches stays where you put it. The back mechanism and the joints are where most loungers fail, so look at them first.

Bazo's backrest locks in four positions, from flat for sunbathing to reclined for reading. No tools, no knobs: lift it and drop it into the next notch.

Teak or aluminum sun lounger?

Aluminum is the right choice if you carry the lounger in and out every day. If it stays where it is all summer, teak on stainless steel is the one you stop thinking about. Our guide to steel or aluminum garden furniture goes further, and polyrattan, teak or steel covers woven loungers.

Cushion included or bought separately?

Check before you compare prices: some loungers are sold without one. Bazo comes with a full-length cushion in Oat, a pale warm off-white.

Read the fabric. Ours is Sunproof Fontelina olefin, solution-dyed so the color runs through the fiber and the sun cannot bleach it, tested to 1,500 hours of weathering and rated for pool and sea water. The cover lifts off. Our outdoor cushion guide explains the ratings.

Wheels, and where it will stand

Bazo has two wheels at the head end: lift the foot end and roll it into the sun or the shade. On a lawn, by a pool or on a terrace, the frame and teak stay out all season.

By a pool, rinse off chlorine and salt with fresh water now and then; our pool lounge chair guide has the space you need around it. In winter, the frame can stay out and the cushion comes in.

Bazo is 77 in long and 31 in wide.

How high is Bazo?

13 in to the slats lying flat.

No. A day bed is wider. The Bazo Day Bed is 62 x 79 in with a canopy frame.
