Furnish a bedroom around the bed in three layers: a bedside table on each open side, its top level with the mattress or up to 5 cm above; an end of bed bench about 130 cm long for a 140 to 160 cm bed, if there is 100 cm behind the bed; and a reading chair in a corner where light falls over your shoulder.

Most bedroom ideas start with paint and bedding. The room works or fails on the furniture: what you reach for at night, where you sit to put socks on, and whether there is a chair that is not a pile of clothes. This guide goes piece by piece around the bed, with the sizes that decide each one, and says what to leave out when the room is small.

What bedroom furniture do you actually need?

A bed, a bedside table on each side you get in from, somewhere to sit and somewhere to put clothes. Everything else is a bonus.

The order matters. Place the bed first, then the bedside tables, because they are fixed to the bed. Then check what floor is left: an end of bed bench needs room behind the bed, and a reading chair needs a corner of its own. We make the middle of that list, bedside tables, benches and armchairs, not beds or wardrobes.

How high and wide should the bedside tables be?

Top level with the made mattress, or up to about 5 cm above, so your hand lands on it without lifting your shoulder off the pillow. Leave about 5 cm between the bed and each table so the duvet does not catch.

Two Iris beside a 160 cm bed need about 250 cm of wall. Our guides to bedside table height and a pair of bedside tables go through the measuring.

Is an end of bed bench a good idea?

Yes, if there is about 100 cm between the foot of the bed and the wall or wardrobe. The bench takes 39 to 40 cm of it and you need about 60 cm to walk past.

Pick it a little shorter than the bed is wide, so the frame shows at both ends: a 130 cm bench for a 140 to 160 cm bed. At 46 cm, Wilma and Alva sit below almost any mattress, at the height you sit to dress. The end of bed bench guide has the lengths for every bed width.

Where does a reading chair go in a bedroom?

In a corner or beside a window, out of the route between the door and the bed, with light falling over your shoulder from a lamp or the window.

Measure the footprint before the chair arrives: our armchairs are 67 x 82 cm for Kent and 71 x 81 cm for Einar. Beside it, Affe at 79 cm with its ø40 cm top is a lamp table that puts the light where you read. See the reading chair guide and an armchair in the bedroom.

Small bedroom ideas: what should you leave out?

Leave out anything that stands on the floor without earning its place. Measure the gap beside the bed first: from about 35 cm, Lisa on the wall or a round Affe fits; Iris needs about 45 cm.

Lisa is screwed to the wall, so the floor under it stays clear and the room reads larger. A wall light above the table frees the top for a glass and a phone. If the room cannot give 100 cm behind the bed, skip the bench: a good pair of bedside tables does more. More in the small bedside table guide.

How do you make the pieces look like they belong together?

Repeat one thing across the room: a colour, a material or a height.

Oak is the easy thread. Lisa, Affe and the Alva bench come in the same natural, dark or black oak, and the Einar armchair has an oak frame in the same three finishes. Black is the other: a black Iris, a black-framed Wilma bench and a Kent armchair on black steel read as one set. What looks wrong is nearly matching, two oaks a shade apart.

Frequently asked questions

What furniture should be in a bedroom?

A bed, a bedside table on each side you get in from, somewhere to sit, and storage for clothes. A bench or a reading chair if there is floor left.

How do I make a small bedroom look bigger?

Keep the floor clear. A bedside table screwed to the wall, such as Lisa, a wall light above it, and no bench if there is under 100 cm behind the bed.

How much space do I need for a bench at the end of the bed?

About 100 cm from the foot of the bed: 39 to 40 cm for the bench and 60 cm to walk past.

Can you put an armchair in a bedroom?

Yes, in a corner or by a window, away from the route to the bed. Kent needs 67 x 82 cm of floor, Einar 71 x 81 cm.

Should the bedside tables match?

They do not have to. Keep the tops at about the same height and repeat one colour or material.

Do you make beds or wardrobes?

No. We make the pieces around the bed: bedside tables, benches and armchairs.
