That number is your target. A top up to about 5 cm higher is fine. Lower than the mattress means reaching down in the dark.
How do I measure?
Make the bed as you sleep in it, with the topper and the duvet. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress at the edge where you lie.
Which table for which bed?
| Mattress top | Table | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 55 cm | Affe 59 cm, or Lisa mounted low | Low and platform beds |
| 55 to 65 cm | Iris 64 cm | Standard beds with a topper |
| Over 65 cm | Lisa mounted at your height | Box spring and high beds |
Does the headboard matter?
Only for the lamp. A tall headboard can hide a low table lamp or crowd it. Keep the table top under the headboard edge and choose a lamp that clears it.
The table width matters more than height next to a wide headboard: keep about 5 to 10 cm between them.
What about a side table next to a chair?
Use the armrest instead of the mattress: top level with the arm or a little below. Affe at 59 cm suits most sofas and lounge chairs. Affe at 79 cm is a lamp table beside a reading chair.
How tall should a bedside table lamp be?
Sit up in bed against the headboard. The bottom of the shade should be at about chin height: low enough that the bulb does not shine in your eyes, high enough to light the page. The lower the table, the taller the lamp, and the other way round.
Check the base too. It should leave room for a glass, a phone and a book. On a small top such as Affe's ø30 cm, a wall lamp above the table keeps the whole top free.
