Most dining table styling advice is photographs of tables nobody eats at. This guide is the version for a table used every day: what goes in the middle, what to leave off, how shape and top change it, and how to dress it for guests. It assumes a table like ours: 30 in high, solid oak or Dekton stone, made in Sweden.
What goes in the middle of a dining table?
One centerpiece, kept low: a bowl, a vase or a tray of candles. Under about 12 in, so two seated people can still see each other across it.
Taller works only if it is narrow, like a single stem or a slim candle. A wide arrangement at eye height turns dinner into two rows talking sideways.
The rest of the top stays empty. An open stretch of oak or stone is not unfinished. It is where the plates go.
How to style a long dining table
Work along the length, not across it.
On Ann, Melker or Diana at 94.5 or 110 in, a runner or a row of three low objects down the center line reads as one gesture. Keep the ends clear so the end seats face a plate, not a vase.
On a 63 in table, one group in the middle is enough. Three groups on a short table look like a shop shelf.
How to style a round dining table
One object, centered. A round table has no head and no line, so a single bowl or vase in the middle is the whole composition.
Luna ø110 seats four, so keep the centerpiece to about a third of the diameter or the plates will touch it. On Luna ø140 there is room for a low tray with candles.
Oak or stone: what the top changes
Oak wants a mat, a tray or a runner under anything wet. The top is lacquered and standing water marks it. Hot pans go on a trivet.
Dekton on Diana resists heat and stains, so a fruit bowl or a candle tray can sit straight on it. It is sintered stone, not marble, and it needs no sealing.
Black oak and Grafite show dust and crumbs first. Fewer objects on a dark top look better and wipe faster.
Dressing the table for guests
Clear the everyday things, then lay the table: plates, glasses, napkins, and the centerpiece back in the middle if it is low enough.
Candles are the easiest upgrade. Keep the ones on the table low and let floor candle holders beside it carry the height: Thomas stands 37.4, 41.3 and 45.3 in tall as a set of three, well above seated heads. See our candle holders.
A tablecloth is optional on a good top. On oak, a linen runner protects the middle and leaves the grain showing.
Rug and chairs around the table
The room styles the table as much as the top does. A rug should run about 24 in past the table on every side so pulled-out chairs stay on it. The dining table size guide has the numbers.
Matching dining chairs make a calm table. Two chair models, or a bench on one side, make a relaxed one. Keep one thing in common, the oak or the frame color, so it looks chosen.
What to leave off
Anything taller than a seated face and wider than a hand. Bowls of things nobody uses. Scented candles while you eat.
A permanent pile of post belongs on a tray on the sideboard, not on the table. If it takes more than a minute to clear for dinner, there is too much on it.
Low, few and quick to clear
- Oak
- mats, runner, trivet
- Dekton
- resists heat and stains
- Table height
- 30 in
Keep the middle low. Follow the length on a long table, center one thing on a round one. Protect oak, let stone go bare. Clear it in a minute for dinner. Our tables are made in Sweden with a 10-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
How do you style a dining table?
One low centerpiece, under about 12 in, and the rest of the top clear for plates. On a long table, follow the length with a runner or a row of low objects. On a round one, center a single bowl or vase.
What do you put on a dining table when not in use?
A bowl, a vase or a tray of candles in the middle. Keep it to one group, so the table clears for a meal in a minute.
How tall should a dining table centerpiece be?
Under about 12 in, so seated guests can see each other. Taller only if it is narrow, like a single stem or a slim candle.
How do you decorate a long dining table?
Down the center line: a runner or three low objects in a row. On a 63 in table, one group in the middle is enough.
Should a dining table have a tablecloth?
Not on a good oak or stone top. On oak, use a runner or mats against heat and standing water.
How do you style a round dining table?
Center one object, no wider than about a third of the table. On Luna ø110 that is a bowl or a small vase.
