Black dining tables look sharp in a photo and show every crumb, fingerprint and dusty plate in a real kitchen, unless the surface is right. The difference is in the top: stained oak, lacquer, or stone. This guide is which black is which, what each one shows, and how to keep a black table from looking gray and dusty.

Which black?

Black oak is a black stain under matte lacquer, so the oak grain still shows. Grafite is a near-black stone, matte, with no grain.

Will it show marks?

Matte black hides fingerprints better than gloss, and grain hides more than a flat color. Black oak, with its visible grain, is the most forgiving wood finish. Dust shows on any black surface in sunlight.

Grafite stone does not stain and shrugs off heat, so wine rings and hot dishes are a wipe, not a mark. It is the low-worry black.

What goes with a black table?

Light floors and white walls make a black table the anchor of the room. Chairs in natural oak soften it; black chairs make it graphic; boucle or light upholstery makes it warm.

On a dark floor, a black table disappears. Choose a dark oak or a Sabbia stone top instead, or put a light rug under it.

White or light dining table?

If black feels too heavy, go light: natural oak, or a pale stone on a light frame. We do not make a white tabletop.

The lightest of our tops is natural oak, on Ann, Melker, Diana or Luna. Diana also comes with Sabbia, a sandy beige sintered stone, or Grigio, a mid gray. On Design Your Own, Melker, Diana and Luna take a white or beige frame, so natural oak or Sabbia on a white frame is the closest thing to a white dining table in our range.

A light table hides the dust and crumbs a black one shows, but natural oak still wants a mat under red wine. Sabbia stone simply wipes clean.

Care

Black oak: a barely damp cloth, then dry. No standing water, no silicone polish, which leaves a gray film on black. Grafite: any household cleaner.

A black table looks gray when it is filmed with cleaner. Wipe with plain water and a dry cloth after cleaning.
