What is the difference between counter stools and bar stools?

The difference between counter stools and bar stools is seat height. Counter stools are typically designed for countertops around 90 cm (35”) high and usually have a seat height of 66 cm (26”). Bar stools are designed for higher counters or bars around 100–110 cm (39–43”) and usually have a seat height of 76 cm (30”). Choosing the correct height is essential for comfort and proper legroom.

How do I choose the correct stool height for my kitchen island or counter?

A general rule is to allow 23–26 cm (9–10”) of space between the seat and the underside of the countertop. For a standard 90 cm (35”) kitchen counter, a 66 cm (26”) counter stool is recommended. For higher counters or bar-height surfaces, a 76 cm (30”) bar stool is usually the correct choice. If your counter height falls outside these ranges, a custom-height stool may be required.
