Garden Dining Chair Signe with a black steel frame and teak slats, three-quarter view

A garden dining chair has to be comfortable for a three-hour dinner and survive the rain that follows. The frame decides whether it lasts, the seat decides how much you have to do. This guide is how teak and cushioned chairs differ outside, when armrests are worth the width, and how many fit your table.

Teak or cushion?

Teak slats on Signe and Edith let rain drain straight through. The chair is dry soon after a shower, and the teak weathers silver-grey unless you oil it once a year.

Elsy and Isa have a structural outdoor mesh in the seat and back, with a wrap cushion in Oat olefin on top. The mesh carries you and drains; the cushion is solution-dyed and lifts off to wash or store. Softer for long dinners, one more thing to bring in.

Arms or no arms?

Arms are more comfortable for long meals and help older guests stand up. No arms fit more chairs and slide fully under the table. A common mix: arms at the ends, none along the sides.

Will they fit my table?

All four sit at 46 cm with a 43 cm seat depth and stand 79 cm tall, right for a 72 to 76 cm table. Garden Diana is 76 cm.

Allow about 70 cm of table edge per chair outdoors, so arms and cushions do not clash. On a 240 cm Diana that is three along each side, plus one at each end.

Steel or aluminium frame?

Steel, and stainless: all four are welded from stainless steel tube (EN 10088, 1.4306, AISI 304L) with a 1.5 mm wall, then powder-coated black. A chip in the coat does not rust, and there are no bolts to work loose.

Aluminium does not rust either and is lighter, which is good for carrying and less good in wind. We do not make aluminium chairs. With either metal, ask what is under the paint and how the joints are made: plain painted steel rusts where it chips, and bolted joints loosen. The full comparison is in steel or aluminium garden furniture.

Dining chair or lounge chair?

These four are dining chairs, for a 76 cm table. For the hour after dinner, a low lounge chair such as Kenny or Arvid sits deeper and leans back.

They do not stack. Teak chairs can stay out all year; lift them off wet grass. Cushions on Elsy and Isa last longest stored dry in winter.
