Edge per chair
As a rule of thumb, a round table seats one person per 70 cm of edge: four at 110 cm across, six at 140 cm and eight at 180 cm. Chairs meet at their front corners first around a circle, so we recommend slim, armless chairs for tables below 120 cm across and keeping chairs with armrests for tables of 140 cm and up.
A round table changes the arithmetic of seating. There are no corners and no ends, so everyone faces the middle and one more guest usually fits than at a rectangle of the same size. It also changes which chairs work, because chairs placed around a circle close in on each other at the front. This guide gives the number of chairs for every common diameter, the chair shapes that suit a round table, when armrests work, and how much room a round table needs. Every figure is in centimetres, with the seating for our own Luna table.
How many chairs fit around a round table?
As a rule of thumb, allow 70 cm of table edge per chair for comfort, or 60 cm when you need to squeeze in one more.
The edge of a round table is its diameter multiplied by 3.14. A 110 cm table has 346 cm of edge: four chairs with room to spare, or five at a squeeze.
The chart applies the rule to the common diameters. Use the first column of counts for everyday dining and the second for the occasional extra guest. The base matters too: a central pedestal leaves the whole edge free for knees, while legs near the edge take up room between places, so check where the legs stand before you count the last chair.

Which dining chairs work best at a round table?
Slim, armless chairs with a back no wider than the seat usually work best, because chairs around a circle meet at their front corners first.
Isabell, 43 cm wide, with a back that follows the seat.
Around a straight edge, chairs stand side by side. Around a curve they point to the centre, so the gap between them narrows towards the table. A chair of 43 to 45 cm keeps a usable gap at every common diameter; one of 55 cm or more needs a large table.
Our Bella and Isabell are 43 cm wide and Karin 45 cm, which is why they suit round tables down to 90 cm. A back that follows the shape of the seat, as on all three, also lets chairs slide in close without touching.
Can you use chairs with armrests at a round table?
Yes, at tables of about 140 cm and up, where each chair gets at least 70 cm of edge and the armrests clear their neighbours.
Below that, chairs with arms push each other apart and rarely slide in fully. At a 110 cm table, four armchairs fit but sit well back from the edge.
Check the base as well as the edge. Armrests have to pass under the tabletop, so measure from the floor to the underside: our Sella's armrests are 64 cm high and Erik's 67 cm, both below the 73 cm underside of our round Luna. Our guide to dining chairs with arms covers the rest of the choice.
Is a round or rectangular table better for a small room?
A round table fits more people into a small or square room, because there are no corners to walk around and chairs can be pushed closer together.
A 110 cm round table seats four in a space of about 290 x 290 cm, including 90 cm all round to pull out chairs. A rectangle for four, 120 x 80 cm, needs a space of 300 x 260 cm and seats nobody at the ends.
In a long, narrow room the rectangle wins, because it follows the walls. Our guide to dining chairs for small spaces compares the options in more detail.
How much space do you need around a round table?
We recommend 90 cm between the edge of the table and the wall on every side, so a 110 cm table needs a clear circle of about 290 cm and a 140 cm table one of 320 cm.
Where people walk behind seated guests, allow 110 cm on that side.
A rug under a round table usually looks best round too, and should be large enough that the chairs stay on it when pulled out: roughly 240 cm across for a 110 cm table and 270 cm for a 140 cm table.
Which of our tables and chairs work together at a round table?
Our round Luna table comes in 110 cm and 140 cm, 76 cm high, and seats four or six of any by Crea dining chair.
The 110 cm table suits four Bella, Isabell or Karin chairs; the 140 cm table takes six of them, or six Sella or Erik chairs with armrests.
Luna is a solid oak top on crossed black steel legs, in Oak, Dark Oak or Black Oak, and like our chairs it is welded, finished and assembled in our own factory. For the full range of shapes and sizes, see our dining tables.

Frequently asked questions
How many chairs fit around a 120 cm round table?
Five comfortably, or six at a squeeze. A 120 cm table has 377 cm of edge, and each chair needs 60 to 70 cm.
What size round table seats six?
A table of 140 cm across seats six comfortably, with 73 cm of edge per chair. A 120 cm table seats six only at a squeeze.
What size round table seats four?
A table of 90 to 110 cm across. At 110 cm each person gets over 80 cm of edge, plenty of room for armless chairs.
Do armchairs work at a round dining table?
Yes, at tables of about 140 cm and up, provided the armrests pass under the tabletop. Below that, slim armless chairs fit better.
How wide should a chair be for a round table?
About 43 to 45 cm at the front. Chairs around a circle meet at their front corners first, so slimmer chairs keep a usable gap.
How much room does a round dining table need?
We recommend 90 cm from the edge to the wall on every side: a clear circle of about 290 cm for a 110 cm table and 320 cm for a 140 cm table.
