To check any bench, look at the end grain on a leg or the underside. Solid oak shows the same grain on every face.
Solid oak or veneer?
Solid. Every part of Alva is oak timber, so an edge knock shows oak underneath, and a deep scratch can be sanded and relacquered. A veneered bench has a thin oak face over board: once it is through, it is through.
Which finish?
Natural oak is a matte lacquer over the raw color. Dark oak is a tobacco-brown stain under the same lacquer. Black oak is black stain, with the grain still visible.
The same oak and finishes are used on our oak chairs, stools, Ann, Luna and Affe, so a matching set is possible. Order wood samples to see the finish in your light.
Wood seat or boucle?
A bare oak seat is the hall and the family choice: wet bags and crumbs wipe off. A boucle seat in Ivory or Greige (Black on black oak) is softer for the foot of the bed or a long dinner.
The frame and length are the same either way.
How do I care for an oak bench?
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it. No oil, no wax: it is lacquered. Keep it away from a radiator, and expect sun to warm the color over time.
Patina and grain variation are oak, not faults. A deep mark can be sanded and relacquered.
