A low lounge bench will not do: plates end up at chin height. Our guide to dining benches has the same rule for indoor tables.
Which bench height for a garden table with benches?
The same as a dining chair: an 18 in seat for a 30 in table. Hedvig and Wilma garden both sit at 18 in, Diana garden stands at 30 in, and our garden dining chairs sit at 18 in too, so bench and chairs line up at one table.
How long should the bench be?
Shorter than the clear width between the table legs, so it slides fully under when nobody sits there. On our indoor tables that is about 12 in less than the top. Measure the clear width between the legs of your own table before you order.
Our garden benches stop at 51 in, so on a longer table put two end to end, pushed together with no gap. Both come in 25.6, 39.5 and 51 in (25.5, 39.5 and 51 in); Wilma garden in Lunar stone is 25.6 in only.
How many people fit at a garden table with a bench?
The bench rows assume the legs leave that much room: check it first. With chairs only, the same tables seat 6, 8 and 10. Two benches facing each other seat the most, but everyone has to climb in, and older guests prefer a chair with a back.
| Diana garden | Bench side | On the bench | Chairs opposite | Ends | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 63 in | One 51 in | 2 to 3 | 2 | 2 | 6 to 7 |
| 94.5 in | Two 39.5 in, 79 in in all | 4 | 3 | 2 | 9 |
| 110 in | 130 + 39.5 in, 90.5 in in all | 4 to 5 | 4 | 2 | 10 to 11 |
Bench or chairs: what goes where?
A bench against a wall or hedge, chairs on the open side where people walk. A bench needs no room behind it to be pulled out: people step over it.
Hedvig and Wilma garden have no backrest, and there is no version with one. For long dinners, put chairs with backs at the ends: Signe or Elsy with arms, Edith or Isa without. Our garden chairs guide compares the four.
Teak or stone bench?
Hedvig is teak slats on black stainless steel: warm to sit on, dry soon after rain, and silver-gray within a season unless you oil it once a year. Wilma garden has a sintered stone seat on a stainless steel frame that does not weather, fade or need oil, but feels cooler in spring and autumn.
We do not sell cushions for either bench. If you want a warm seat on a cool evening, choose teak. Our garden bench guide goes further into both.
Can the table and benches stay out all year?
Yes. The stone top, the stone bench and the stainless frames stay out. Lift Hedvig off wet ground or grass so the feet do not stand in water, and use a breathable cover if you like, never plastic sheeting.
Hedvig arrives flat-pack with the slats fitted: eight bolts. Wilma garden arrives assembled.
