Black is the most common bar stool color, and our black bar stools guide covers it in full. But a row of black stools is not right for every kitchen: in a white or cream kitchen it can look heavy, and against green cabinets it can feel hard. This guide covers the colors beyond black: white, beige and cream, gray, brown, and what to put in front of a green kitchen. It uses only the colors we actually make: four powder-coated frame colors, three oak finishes and sixteen seat colors across vegan leather, velvet and bouclé. Every combination below can be built in Design Your Own and checked first with samples.
What color bar stools should I choose?
Take the color from the island, the floor or the fittings, not from a new idea: a stool that repeats a color already in the kitchen looks planned, one in a new color looks added.
Then decide between contrast and calm. A frame that matches the island or the floor recedes; a frame that contrasts with it draws an outline.
A steel stool has two colors to decide, the frame and the seat; an oak stool has its oak finish and, on Ted and Carl, a bouclé seat if you want one. The table matches the main kitchen colors to the frames and seats we make. Our steel frames come in black, white, beige and taupe; our oak in natural, dark and black.

Are white bar stools a good idea?
White bar stools suit white, cream and Scandinavian kitchens where the island should stay light, but they show marks sooner than darker colors.
A white frame with a white or ivory seat almost disappears against white cabinets, which is the point in a small kitchen and a risk in a large one, where the stools can start to look like part of the units.
To keep a white kitchen from looking flat, add one warm material: natural oak stools such as Eva or Ebba, or a white frame with a latte vegan leather seat. Of our seats, vegan leather is the practical white: it wipes clean with a damp cloth. Ivory bouclé is softer and warmer but tends to show marks sooner, so it suits kitchens used a little more gently. All four of our steel stools can be ordered with a white frame through Design Your Own.
Ivory bouclé on Philip: a light seat for a white kitchen.
Beige and cream bar stools: which frame and seat?
For a beige or cream kitchen, choose a beige frame with a sand, latte or ivory seat, or natural oak, and aim for a stool one shade lighter or darker than the cabinets rather than the same.
Latte vegan leather: a warm beige that wipes clean.
Our beige and taupe frames change with their surroundings: next to a pale oak floor they warm up, next to concrete they cool down and read almost gray.
What shops call cream is usually what we call ivory: ivory vegan leather or ivory bouclé. Greige bouclé sits between beige and gray and suits kitchens with stone or plaster in those tones, and sand velvet gives a beige stool a softer, deeper surface. In a family kitchen, sand or latte vegan leather is the practical beige, because it wipes clean. Our bar stool upholstery guide explains how each fabric wears.
Which bar stools suit a gray kitchen?
A taupe or black frame with a light gray seat suits a cool gray kitchen; greige bouclé or taupe velvet suits a warm one. We do not make a gray frame, but taupe comes close next to concrete and gray stone.
Greige bouclé sits between beige and gray.
Light gray comes in vegan leather and velvet, and greige bouclé is a warm gray-beige.
Gray kitchens have two moods. A cool kitchen of concrete, steel and white suits quiet stools that let the island lead: a taupe frame with a light gray seat, or black with light gray for more outline. A warm gray kitchen, with oak floors or warm lighting, suits greige bouclé or taupe velvet. Light gray also tends to hide everyday dust better than white or ivory, which makes it a good light color for a family island.
Which bar stools suit a green kitchen?
Oak, in most green kitchens: natural oak with sage and pale greens, dark oak with deep forest and olive greens. We do not make a green bar stool, and in our view a green kitchen rarely needs one.
Green cabinets already set the color of the room. Stools that repeat the green tend to merge into the units, while wood or a warm brown seat sets them off.
If you prefer steel, a black frame with a latte, coffee bean or chocolate vegan leather seat goes well with the black or brass faucets that green kitchens often have, and a white frame with an ivory seat keeps a pale green kitchen soft. Ebba and Eva come in natural, dark and black oak; so do Ted and Carl, with a bouclé seat if you want one. Order wood samples and hold them against a cabinet door.
Brown bar stools: dark oak, coffee bean or chocolate?
Choose dark oak for a brown stool with visible grain, and coffee bean or chocolate vegan leather for a brown seat on a steel frame.
Coffee bean vegan leather: a dark brown seat for a steel stool.
Dark oak is the warmest dark stool we make, and it tends to suit marble, stone and pale kitchens that need some weight without black.
Of our vegan leathers, coffee bean and chocolate are the dark browns and latte is a light caramel. A brown seat on a black frame is a classic two-tone, and Freja can also have a contrasting vegan leather backrest, such as a jade black seat with a coffee bean or latte back. Our oak bar stools guide shows the oak finishes in real kitchens.
Should all the stools be the same color?
Usually yes: one frame color and one seat color along an island looks calm, and the eye reads the row as one piece.
If you want variety, vary one thing only, such as the backrest or armrest color, and keep the frame and the seat height the same.
Two-tone stools are the controlled way to add a second color: a jade black seat with a latte or coffee bean backrest on Freja, or coffee bean armrests on a jade black Bruno. Mixing whole stools of different colors along one island tends to look busy at home, though it can work at a long bar. In an open-plan room, keep the frame color or the wood the same as the dining chairs; see our guide to open-plan kitchen-diners.
How do I choose a bar stool color without guessing?
Order samples and look at them against your own countertop, floor and cabinet door, in daylight and in the evening.
Samples show color in your own light, as no screen can.
Screens are unreliable with color, and beige, taupe and ivory in particular change with the light.
We send fabric samples cut from the same rolls we upholster with, powder-coated frame samples in black, white, beige and taupe, and wood samples in natural, dark and black oak. Hold the frame sample and the fabric sample touching, as they will be on the stool. Then build the stool in Design Your Own, which shows your fabric on your frame in 3D before anything is made.

Take the stool color from the island, the floor or the fittings. White or beige frames with white, ivory, sand or latte seats suit pale kitchens; taupe with light gray suits gray ones; oak suits green kitchens; and dark oak, coffee bean or chocolate gives you a brown stool. Keep one frame color along the island and check every choice with samples. Our stools are made in our own factory in Sweden, delivered fully assembled and covered by a 10-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
What color bar stools go with a white kitchen?
Natural oak for warmth, a white frame with a white or ivory seat for a calm, light island, or black for a crisp outline. Vegan leather is the practical white seat, because it wipes clean.
Do you make green bar stools?
No. Our seats come in nine vegan leathers, four velvets and three bouclés, none of them green. For a green kitchen we suggest natural or dark oak, or a warm brown seat.
What color bar stools go with a gray kitchen?
A taupe or black frame with a light gray seat for a cool gray kitchen; greige bouclé or taupe velvet for a warm one.
Are cream bar stools practical?
In vegan leather, yes: ivory vegan leather wipes clean. Ivory bouclé is softer but tends to show marks sooner, so it suits kitchens used more gently.
Which frame colors do your bar stools come in?
Our steel stools come in black, white, beige and taupe, powder-coated in our own factory. Our oak stools come in natural, dark and black oak.
Can I mix stool colors along one island?
It usually works best to keep one frame color and one seat height. Add variety with a contrasting backrest or armrests rather than with different stools.
