A gas lift adjusts but can wear; a welded fixed seat at your exact height, 46 to 90 cm on our steel stools, has nothing to wear out.

Adjustable bar stools are among the most searched-for stools, and the appeal is obvious: one stool that fits any counter and any person. Most do it with a gas lift, a sealed cylinder under the seat, the same idea as in an office chair. We make only fixed-height stools, and we explain why below, but this guide sets out both sides fairly. It covers how a height-adjustable stool works, when it really is the better choice, what tends to wear, and how to get a fixed stool at exactly the right height instead. Every figure is given in centimetres.

Adjustable or fixed bar stools: which is better?

An adjustable stool is better when one stool must fit several counters or very different people; a fixed stool is better when it lives at one counter, because it is simpler, steadier and has nothing to wear out.

A fixed frame: four legs joined by a footrest, with nothing that moves.

Most kitchens are the second case. The island does not move, so the seat height only has to be right once.

The table sets out the trade-offs as we see them. The deciding question is not which type is better in general, but whether your counter or the people using the stool will change.

How does a height-adjustable bar stool work?

Most height-adjustable bar stools use a gas lift: a sealed cylinder of compressed gas inside a central column, released by a lever under the seat.

Pull the lever while seated and the seat sinks under your weight; pull it while standing and the gas pushes the seat up. Let go, and it locks.

The range is limited by the length of the cylinder, so an adjustable stool usually covers counter height or bar height and the space between, not everything from a dining table to a tall bar. Check the stated range against your counter, measured to its underside, before you buy. A few adjustable stools use a screw thread or a pin instead of gas, which is slower to adjust but has no cylinder to wear.

Do gas lift bar stools wear out?

They can. The cylinder is a sealed moving part that carries the full load every time someone sits down, and over the years its seals can wear, so the seat slowly sinks or no longer holds its height.

Good cylinders last a long time, but they remain a moving part, and moving parts wear. A welded fixed frame has nothing that can lose pressure.

In our view the column also takes more strain than four legs: on a single column, every lean back and every climb onto the footrest works on one joint. That is one reason a fixed stool with four legs and a footrest tends to stay steadier at a kitchen island with children. If you choose a gas-lift stool, check whether the cylinder can be replaced and whether the maker states a load rating; ours is 200 kg. Our guide to swivel vs fixed bar stools covers the same question for swivel bearings.

When is an adjustable bar stool the better choice?

When one stool has to serve more than one height: a counter that will change, a stool that moves between a kitchen island and a desk, or very differently sized people sharing one seat.

It can also make sense in a rented home, where the next kitchen may have a different counter.

For a growing child the case is weaker than it looks. What children need most is a footrest they can reach, and a stool with footrests at several heights, such as Ebba, lets everyone settle without moving the seat. Adjustable stools are also common at work, at drawing tables and laboratory benches, where the user changes several times a day. If none of this applies to you, a fixed seat at the right height is the simpler choice.

Why are by Crea bar stools fixed height?

Because a fixed frame can be welded or glued in one piece, with no joint that moves, and that is part of what lets us rate every stool for 200 kg and give it a 10-year warranty.

A gas lift would add a cylinder, a column and usually a swivel: moving parts that carry the full load.

It shapes the design too. A fixed stool stands on four slim legs with a footrest joining them, which in our view looks lighter and stands steadier than a column on a disc. That is our choice as makers, not a verdict on every kitchen: we would rather make a stool that is right at one height for decades than one that is roughly right at many. How do I get a fixed bar stool at exactly the right height?

Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter and subtract 23 to 26 cm: 66 cm for counters of 89 to 92 cm, 76 cm for 99 to 102 cm, and a custom height for anything else.

We make our steel stools, Freja, Philip, Bruno and Svea, at any seat height from 46 to 90 cm, welded to order in Sweden.

A custom seat height is the fixed answer to the problem an adjustable stool solves: it fits one counter exactly, with the same 200 kg load rating and 10-year warranty as the standard sizes. Our oak stools come in 66 and 76 cm only. The bar stool height guide has a calculator, and custom height bar stools explains how to order one.

What if my bar stool is too high or too low?

Do not cut the legs: cutting a frame damages the finish and changes where the footrest sits. A stool made to the right height is the lasting fix.

A seat pad will not correct it either. Ours are 2 to 4 cm thick and made so that they do not change how the stool sits under the counter.

If you are about to buy, measure first: you can order a single test stool, try it at your own counter and return it free of charge within 14 days of delivery if the comfort or build is not right, though a wrong seat height is not covered. If your counter has changed since you bought your stools, a steel stool made to the new height is the answer; tell us your counter height and we will confirm the seat.

Choose an adjustable gas-lift stool if one stool must serve several heights or users, and accept a central column and a cylinder that can wear. Choose a fixed stool if it lives at one counter: measure to the underside, subtract 23 to 26 cm, and pick 66 cm, 76 cm or a custom height. Our steel stools are welded at any seat height from 46 to 90 cm in our own factory in Sweden, delivered fully assembled, rated for 200 kg and covered by a 10-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Do you make adjustable bar stools?

No. Our stools have a fixed seat height, with no gas lift. Instead we weld our steel stools to the exact seat height you need, anywhere from 46 to 90 cm.

How long do gas lift bar stools last?

It depends on the cylinder and how the stool is used. A gas lift is a sealed moving part, so over the years it can lose pressure and sink. A welded fixed frame has nothing that can.

Are adjustable bar stools good for a kitchen island?

They work, but most islands never change height, so the adjustment is used once. A fixed stool at the right height is usually steadier and simpler.

Can I lower a bar stool that is too high?

We do not recommend cutting the legs: it damages the finish and changes where the footrest sits. A stool made to the right height is the better answer.

What seat height do I need?

Your counter height, measured to the underside, minus 23 to 26 cm: 66 cm for 89 to 92 cm, 76 cm for 99 to 102 cm.

Are adjustable bar stools better for children?

Children need a footrest they can reach more than a seat that moves. Footrests at several heights, as on Ebba, often help more than a gas lift.
