What Makes an Armchair Comfortable? Seat, Back and Cushions

A comfortable lounge armchair has a seat low and deep enough to lean back in, around 35 to 45 cm high and 50 to 55 cm deep, a back that supports you up to the shoulders, arms where your forearms rest without lifting, and cushions firm enough to hold their shape for years. The lower and deeper the seat, the more relaxed it feels, and the harder it is to get up from.

Comfort in an armchair is not the same as softness. A chair that swallows you in the showroom can leave your back aching after an hour, while a firmer, well-proportioned chair feels better the longer you sit. What makes the difference is a handful of measurements and the way the cushions are built. This guide explains each of them: seat height, seat depth, the back, the arms and the cushions, how they suit different bodies, and how to test an armchair properly. Every figure is in centimetres, with the measurements of our own armchairs, Kent and Einar.

What makes an armchair comfortable?

A low, deep seat you can lean back in, a back that supports you to the shoulders, arms at a natural height and cushions that stay firm.

Those four work together. A deep seat without a tall back leaves your shoulders hanging; a tall back on a shallow seat pushes you forward. Soft cushions that sink too far tire the back over a long evening.

The chart below shows how our armchairs are built for comfort.

Is a low or a high seat more comfortable in an armchair?

For most people a low seat, 35 to 40 cm, is more relaxing, because you lean back and stretch your legs; a higher seat, 42 to 45 cm, is easier to get in and out of.

Lounge chairs are low on purpose. The seat tilts slightly back, so your weight rests against the back cushion instead of on your thighs.

Kent and Einar sit at 38 cm. For reading and evenings that height suits most people; for someone who finds standing up difficult, a higher seat is kinder, and armrests to push against help either way.

How deep should a comfortable armchair be?

A seat depth of 50 to 55 cm suits most adults: enough to lean back fully, with your knees at the front edge and feet flat on the floor.

Too shallow and you perch on the edge; too deep and shorter people end up with their legs sticking out or a gap behind the back. A cushion behind the back shortens a deep seat, which is why a deep chair tends to suit a mixed household better than a shallow one.

Our armchairs have a 53 cm seat depth. The armchair dimensions guide sets out every measurement.

Why does the back of an armchair matter?

Because a back that stops below the shoulder blades leaves your upper back and neck to hold themselves up, which most people feel within the first half hour.

A full-height back cushion supports the whole back and lets you rest your head against it when you lean back to read or watch a film.

Kent and Einar have a full-height back cushion over a deep seat cushion, both removable. That makes them easy to air and, when needed, to replace: every cushion is sold separately.

What makes armchair cushions comfortable for years?

Firm, high-density foam that springs back, under a fabric strong enough for daily use; soft, low-density foam feels lovely at first but can flatten within months.

Press a cushion and let go: it should recover its shape at once. A cushion that stays dented will sag where you sit most.

Our cushions are upholstered by hand in our factory in Malmö, in Valencia vegan leather, Matteo velvet or Dolly bouclé. When a cushion does wear, you replace the cushion, not the chair; see our guide to re-covering an armchair or replacing its cushions.

How do you know if an armchair is comfortable before buying?

We recommend sitting in it for 20 minutes the way you will use it: lean back, read, put your feet up, and then stand up without using your hands.

The first minute tells you how soft a chair is. Twenty minutes usually tells you whether your back, neck and knees are happy, and whether the seat height suits you.

That is why we let you order a single test armchair with free returns. For reading in particular, our reading chair guide explains what to look for.

Look for a seat 35 to 45 cm high and 50 to 55 cm deep, a back that reaches your shoulders, and cushions that spring back when pressed. Choose a lower seat for relaxing and a higher one if standing up is hard. We recommend testing it for 20 minutes. Kent and Einar are made in our own factory in Malmö, Sweden, delivered fully assembled and covered by a 10-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most comfortable type of armchair?

One with a low, deep seat, a back that supports you to the shoulders and firm cushions. Lounge and reading chairs are built this way.

What seat height is most comfortable for an armchair?

As a guide, 35 to 40 cm for relaxing, 42 to 45 cm if getting up is difficult. Our Kent and Einar sit at 38 cm.

Why is my armchair uncomfortable after an hour?

Usually because the back stops too low, the seat is too shallow or too deep for you, or the cushions have lost their firmness.

Are low armchairs bad for your back?

Not if the back supports you to the shoulders and the seat is the right depth. They are harder to get up from, which matters for stiff knees or hips.

How can I make an armchair more comfortable?

Add a cushion behind your back if the seat is too deep, a footstool for your legs, and replace flattened cushions rather than the whole chair.

Can I try a by Crea armchair before buying?

Yes. Order a single test armchair with free returns and sit in it at home for as long as you like.
