How to Choose a Quality Armchair That Lasts

Two armchairs can look almost the same in a photograph and last a few years or a few decades. The difference is in places you do not see at first: the joints under the seat, the material under the paint, the foam inside the cushion, the test behind the claims. How can you tell if an armchair is good quality?

Check the frame, the joints, the cushions, the fabric, the load rating and the warranty; a good armchair gets all six right.

Sit down and rock gently: a well-made chair does not creak, flex or shift. Press a cushion and let go: it should spring back at once. Then look underneath, where cheaper chairs hide their shortcuts.

Why do armchairs sag, and can it be fixed?

Armchairs sag when the cushion foam loses its firmness or the support under the seat, webbing or springs, gives way; flattened cushions can be replaced, failed springs need an upholsterer.

A sag that sits exactly where you sit is usually the cushion. A seat that dips even with the cushion removed is the support underneath.

What is the best frame material for an armchair?

Solid hardwood, such as oak, or welded steel; both usually outlast chipboard, softwood and frames held together only with screws.

Solid wood can be repaired and refinished; board cannot, and its screws lose their grip over time. A steel frame is only as good as its joints, so one welded into a single piece usually outlasts one bolted together.

How long should a good armchair last?

A well-made armchair should outlast its warranty by a wide margin, with a frame that outlives several sets of cushions.

The fabric and the foam wear first, long before a good frame. That is why the question to ask is not only how long the chair lasts, but whether its worn parts can be replaced.

What should an armchair warranty cover?

The frame and its joints, for years rather than months; a long warranty is a good sign of how long the maker expects the chair to last.

Read what the warranty covers as well as how long it runs. A frame guarantee says something about the construction, a fabric warranty from the fabric maker something about the upholstery.

Why does it matter where an armchair is made?

Because a maker who controls every step, from welding or shaping the frame to upholstering the cushions, can check every joint and still supply parts years later.

Chairs assembled from bought-in parts are only as consistent as the weakest supplier, and spare cushions can disappear when a supplier changes.
