Best Bar Stools for Kitchen Islands: Which Model Suits Which Island?

The best stool depends on how the island is used, not on a ranking. Full backrests suit islands where the family eats; backless stools suit small islands and narrow kitchens; low backrests suit everyday use and open-plan rooms where the island is seen from the sofa. Choose the seat height first: 66 cm (26 in) for islands of 89 to 92 cm.

Stools with a full, upholstered backrest, and with armrests if people sit for hours. Philip supports the whole back and has an upholstered seat and backrest; Bruno adds armrests on a steel frame; Carl is the oak equivalent with the widest seat in our range, 54 cm (21.3 in).

If the island is where your household eats most meals, comfort matters more than anything else about the stool. Allow 55 cm (21.5 in) of counter for Philip and 60 cm (23.5 in) for Bruno and Carl, and 90 cm (35.5 in) of floor behind. Backless stools with a slim frame: Eva in solid oak or Svea with an upholstered seat on a steel frame. Both have 38 cm (15 in) seats, slide completely under a standard counter and keep a small kitchen open. At a tight 50 cm (19.5 in) per stool, three fit along a 150 cm (59 in) island.

Stools with four legs, a footrest, a backrest and a seat that wipes clean. Freja in jade black vegan leather is the practical favourite: the low back gives children support, the vegan leather wipes clean and the cushion can be replaced with two screws. Ebba in solid oak is the all-wood alternative, with nothing to stain.

Choose a custom seat height on one of our steel models, Freja, Philip, Bruno or Svea. Islands of 93 to 98 cm (36.5 to 38.5 in), common with thick stone tops, fall between the two standard heights; the right seat is the counter height minus 23 to 26 cm, for example 70 cm (27.5 in) for a 95 cm island.

Check five measurements: the island's height to the underside of the worktop, the seating length, the overhang, the floor space behind, and whether any supports or rails sit under the overhang. Together they decide the seat height, the number of stools and whether armrests will fit.
