How to Choose Garden Furniture: A Set That Lasts

Short answer

Dining table
Diana 160-280 cm
Chairs
46 cm seat
Frame
one colour

Decide dining set or lounge set first. Dining: Diana in sintered stone (160, 240 or 280 cm) with 46 cm chairs. Lounge: Kenny or Arvid with a nesting pair of tables. Keep one frame colour across the set.

Most garden furniture sets come in a box with four chairs and a table of the same weak material. Building the set yourself from pieces that last costs a little more and outlives three boxed sets. The rules are simple: choose the job, size the table to the people, keep one frame colour and mix the seats if you like. Here is how.

Dining set or lounge set?

Dining if you eat outside: a 76 cm table and 46 cm chairs. Lounge if you sit with a drink and a book: low chairs and a table at seat height.

With room for both, dining near the kitchen door and lounge where the evening sun lands.

A dining set

Chairs: Signe and Edith in teak, Elsy and Isa with olefin cushions. A Hedvig or Wilma garden bench on one side seats more in less space.

A lounge set

One or two lounge chairs, Kenny on mesh with a cushion or Arvid in teak, with a nesting pair of tables between them: Algot in teak, or Anton or Leo outdoor in sintered stone. Add a bench along a wall for guests.

Mix or match?

Keep the frame colour the same, black across the set, and you can mix the seats: teak chairs at the ends, cushioned along the sides, a stone bench against the wall. It looks chosen, not leftover.

Why not a boxed set?

Boxed sets are priced by matching the weakest part: usually plain painted steel and a fabric that fades. Buying pieces separately means each one is chosen to last, and a single chair can be replaced or added later.
