Garden Dining Table: Size, Top and Chairs That Last Outside

Garden Diana has a sintered stone top on a welded steel frame: no oil, no fading. 160, 240 or 280 cm, 90 cm deep, 76 cm high. It seats 4, 6 or 8 along the sides, plus one at each end.

A garden dining table has a harder life than any indoor one: sun, rain, frost, pollen and red wine, often all in one week. The top decides how much work it is. Wood needs oil, glass shows every mark, painted metal chips. Sintered stone does none of that. This guide is how to size the table for your terrace, which top to choose, and which chairs go with it.

Which top lasts outside?

Sintered stone. Garden Diana uses Dekton, a dense mineral slab that does not absorb water, does not fade in sun and takes frost. A hot dish and a spilt glass wipe off. It is not marble, and it does not need sealing.

Teak is the warm alternative and weathers silver-grey if left untreated. On a table, that means oiling every year if you want it to stay honey-coloured.

Round or rectangular garden table?

Rectangular, if it is one of ours: Garden Diana is a fixed rectangle, 160, 240 or 280 cm long and 90 cm deep. We make no round and no extendable outdoor dining table.

A round table suits four people on a square patch and has no corners to walk around. A rectangle seats more in a row, lines up with a house wall or the edge of a deck, and gives a place at each end.

A round table for drinks comes lower in our range: Leo outdoor is round Dekton in ø95, ø80 or ø70 cm, at coffee-table height.

Which size?

All three are 90 cm deep. The terrace sizes leave about 90 cm on every side to pull out a chair. Outside, more room is kinder: people turn their chairs to the view.

240 cm68about 420 x 270 cm

Which chairs?

Our garden dining chairs all sit at 46 cm, right for a 76 cm table.

Teak: Signe with armrests (50 cm wide) or Edith without (43 cm wide). Cushioned: Elsy with armrests or Isa without, in Oat. Chairs without arms fit one more per side and slide fully under. Chairs with arms are better for long dinners.

Can it stay out in winter?

The stone top, yes. Lift the table feet off standing water and wipe the frame in spring. Bring cushions in when it rains; they dry, but they last longer stored.

A breathable cover is enough. Never wrap a table in plastic sheeting: it traps damp against the frame.

Level ground

A welded frame is rigid and does not adjust to an uneven terrace. Stand it on paving, decking or compacted gravel, and check that all four feet touch before the first dinner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best material for a garden dining table?

Sintered stone needs no care and does not fade. Teak is warmer but weathers or needs oil.

Can a stone garden table stay outside in winter?

Yes. Lift the feet off standing water and use a breathable cover if you like.

How many people does a 240 cm garden table seat?

Six along the sides, eight with one at each end.

How big a terrace do I need?

About 90 cm clear on every side. For a 160 cm table, roughly 340 x 270 cm.

Do you make an extendable garden table?

No. Garden Diana is a fixed table in 160, 240 or 280 cm. Pick the length for the dinners you have most often. The trade-off is in extendable or fixed garden table.

Is a patio dining table the same thing?
