Bedroom Armchair: How to Choose a Chair for the Bedroom Corner

Short answer

60 cm
Floor in front of the chair
90 cm
Clear on the way to the bed
Corner
by the window, light over the shoulder

A bedroom armchair needs its footprint plus about 60 cm of floor in front, and about 90 cm clear wherever people walk to the bed, the wardrobe or the door. Put it in a corner by the window, with light falling over your shoulder, and choose a deep seat with a back to the shoulders if you will read in it. A lounge chair 67 to 71 cm wide fits many bedroom corners.

A chair in the bedroom does a different job from one in the living room. Nobody gathers around it: it is where you read before bed, put on your socks or sit with a coffee by the window. It also competes for floor with the bed, the wardrobe and the doors. This guide covers what a bedroom armchair is for, how much space it needs, where it goes, what makes it good for reading, which fabric and colour suit a bedroom, and when a bench at the end of the bed is the better answer. Measurements are in centimetres, with our own armchairs, Kent and Einar, as examples.

What is an armchair in the bedroom for?

Mostly for reading and for a quiet moment away from the rest of the home: a chair you sit in for a while, not just a place to drop clothes.

A chair gives the bedroom a second place to be besides the bed, which is what turns it into a retreat rather than a room you only sleep in. It is also where many people sit to put on shoes and socks.

If the chair will mostly hold tomorrow's clothes, a simple seat will do. If you will read in it, choose a proper lounge chair, as the sections below explain. Many shops call it a bedroom accent chair; the job is the same.

What size armchair fits a bedroom?

As a planning guide, the chair's footprint plus about 60 cm in front for the person sitting, and about 90 cm clear on the way to the bed, the wardrobe and the door.

Bedrooms are usually tighter than living rooms, and the bed takes most of the floor. Measure the corner you have in mind, check that wardrobe doors and drawers still open fully, and mark the footprint on the floor with tape before you buy.

Kent is 67 x 82 cm, so with 60 cm in front it needs about 67 x 142 cm. Einar is 71 x 81 cm. For very small rooms, our guide to armchairs for small living rooms has more footprints and shapes.

Where should an armchair go in a bedroom?

A corner by the window is the classic spot: daylight from the side for reading, two walls for shelter, and the chair out of the way of the bed.

Keep the back of the chair off a radiator and out of strong, direct sun, which fades fabric and changes the colour of oak over time. Make sure it does not block a wardrobe door or the side of the bed you get out of.

The chart below compares the usual places for a bedroom chair.

What makes a good bedroom reading chair?

A deep seat you can tuck your legs into, a back that supports you to the shoulders, and a lamp behind and to the side of the chair so the light falls over your shoulder.

In a bedroom you often read late and for a long time, so the chair matters more than in a living room, where the sofa competes for the evening. A seat 50 to 55 cm deep and a full back cushion let you settle in.

Kent and Einar have a 53 cm deep seat at 38 cm and a full-height back cushion. Add a small table at about arm height: our guide to side tables helps with the height, and our reading chair guide covers light in detail.

Which fabric and colour suit a bedroom armchair?

A soft, warm fabric such as bouclé or velvet, in a calm colour that sits with the bedding: ivory, greige, or a dark tone that repeats the headboard or the bedside tables.

Dolly bouclé in Greige: warm against bare arms.

A bedroom chair is often sat in with bare arms and legs, so the feel of the fabric matters. Bouclé is warm and textured, velvet smooth and deep; vegan leather feels cool at first and is the easiest to wipe clean.

Our Dolly bouclé comes in Ivory, Greige and Black, Matteo velvet in Jade Black and Valencia vegan leather in Ivory and Jade Black. Our guide to accent chair colours covers colour, and the best fabric for an armchair compares the fabrics.

Armchair or a bench at the end of the bed?

A bench at the end of the bed is for sitting briefly, to dress or to put down a bag; an armchair is for sitting a while. If you want to read in the bedroom, choose the chair.

A bench uses floor at the foot of the bed that would otherwise stay empty, and keeps the room open. An armchair needs a corner and more depth, but gives you a back to lean against.

Rooms with space can have both. Our end of bed bench guide covers length and height, and our guide to furnishing a bedroom brings the bed, bedside tables, bench and chair together.

Kent or Einar: which suits a bedroom?

Kent, 67 cm wide on a slim black steel frame, is the lighter-looking choice for a tight corner; Einar, 71 cm wide in solid oak, suits a bedroom with oak furniture.

Both sit at 38 cm, with a 53 cm seat depth, and stand 70 cm tall. Einar's oak comes in Oak, Dark Oak and Black Oak, so it can match oak bedside tables exactly or step darker on purpose.

Both are delivered fully assembled, so measure the bedroom door and any tight landing on the way in. See Einar in oak with Ivory bouclé, and our bedside table guide for the tables beside the bed.

Plan the chair's footprint plus about 60 cm in front, and keep the way to the bed and the wardrobe clear. Put it in a corner by the window with light over your shoulder. If you will read in it, choose a deep seat, a back to the shoulders and a soft fabric. Kent and Einar are made in our own factory in Sweden, delivered fully assembled and covered by a 10-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do you need for an armchair in a bedroom?

As a planning guide, the chair's footprint plus about 60 cm in front, and about 90 cm clear on the way to the bed and the wardrobe. Kent needs about 67 x 142 cm in all.

Where do you put an accent chair in a bedroom?

In a corner by the window, angled into the room, or beside the bed next to the bedside table. Keep it off radiators and clear of wardrobe doors.

What size armchair suits a bedroom?

As a rule of thumb, under about 75 cm wide fits most bedroom corners, with at least 50 cm of seat depth if you will read in it.

Is a lounge chair a good bedroom chair?

Yes, for reading: a low, deep seat and a back to the shoulders are what you want late in the evening. For dressing only, a bench or a simple chair is enough.

Should a bedroom armchair match the bed?

It does not have to. Repeat one thing, the colour of the bedding, the wood of the bedside tables or the black of a bed frame, and let the rest differ.

Can I return an armchair if it does not fit?

After delivery, you have 14 days to request a return, provided the armchair is unused and in its original condition. Measure the corner and the doorways before you order.
