Dining Chair Colours: Beige, Green, Black or Brown, and What Suits an Oak or Stone Table
By Alexandra PetterssonReviewed by Alexander TjernströmUpdated
Short answer
Black
and warm neutrals suit almost any table
Greige
rather than cool grey where there is wood
Green
on the walls rather than six chairs
The most versatile dining chair colours are black and warm neutrals such as ivory, sand and greige: they sit well with oak, stone and painted tables alike. Brown works when it is warm and has a wood or a textile to answer in the room, and a strong colour such as green is usually easier to live with on the walls, a rug or the tablecloth than on six chairs. Choose the fabric for your household first, then the colour.
Chairs are the largest block of colour around a dining table, and the one you will look at every day for years. This guide covers which colours go with almost everything, whether light beige or white chairs are practical, when black works and when it feels heavy, grey against greige, green and other strong colours, brown chairs, and which colours suit a stone table. Oak tables and mixing colours around one table have guides of their own, linked below. The examples use the colours we make our own chairs in.
Which dining chair colour goes with everything?
Black and warm neutrals, such as ivory, sand and greige, go with the widest range of tables, floors and walls; brown and strong colours ask more of the room around them.
A neutral chair lets the table, the walls and the textiles change over the years without the chairs having to change with them. A strong colour fixes the scheme for as long as you keep the chairs.
The chart below groups the colours we make our chairs in by what each one does in a room.

Are beige or white dining chairs practical?
Yes, if the fabric wipes clean: a light vegan leather shrugs off spills that would mark a light woven fabric, and a warm off-white such as ivory is more forgiving than pure white.
Light chairs make a dining area look larger and calmer. The worry is marks. On a coated surface they wipe off; on a woven fabric they need to be blotted at once.
Our Valencia vegan leather in Ivory, on Isabell, Bella and Sella, and in Sand, on Isabell and Bella, wipes clean with lukewarm water and mild soap and is rated at 300,000 Martindale. Ivory bouclé suits a calmer household, or one with pets, as it is tested against claws. We do not make a pure white chair. Our guide to cleaning upholstered dining chairs has the routine for each fabric.
Are black dining chairs a good choice?
Yes: black hides spills and scuffs better than light colours and gives almost any table a clear outline; the place to be careful is a small, dark room, where black chairs at a black table can feel heavy.
Sella chairs with armrests around a black oak dining table.
A black frame reads as a thin line rather than a block, so a slim black chair looks lighter than its colour suggests. Dust does show on a black seat, so a quick brush now and then keeps it sharp.
We make black three ways: black powder-coated steel frames on Sella, Bella and Isabell; seats in Jade Black vegan leather or velvet and Black bouclé; and Black Oak on Karin and Erik. Black on black is graphic and modern; a black frame with an Ivory or Sand seat is softer. For the table itself, see our guide to the black dining table.
Where there is wood in the room, usually greige: a grey with a warm beige undertone sits between honey-toned oak and a grey interior, while a cool grey can make the wood beside it look yellow.
Dolly bouclé in Greige: blot spills and never scrub the loops.
Pure grey suits a cool grey-and-white scheme with little wood, or a grey stone table. Greige is the safer choice when the floor, the table or the chairs themselves are oak.
Our Dolly bouclé comes in Greige rather than a cool grey: on Karin in natural oak it bridges the wood and a grey room. If your room is mostly grey with no wood, Black bouclé or Jade Black on a black frame is the calmer partner.
Do green dining chairs work?
They can, as a deliberate statement, but green is usually easier to live with on the walls, a rug or the tablecloth than on six chairs, because chairs outlast several redecorations.
Green chairs tend to work best when the green already exists in the room, in a wall, a kitchen front or plants, and in a muted shade rather than a bright one. A green that answers nothing tends to look added rather than chosen.
We do not make green chairs. In a green room our chairs work as the calm base: oak and warm neutrals sit well against green walls, and black frames give a deep green a sharp edge. The same thinking applies to blue, pink or terracotta. Our guide to mixing and matching dining chairs shows how to take a colour from the room.
When do brown dining chairs work?
When the brown is warm and has something to answer in the room: a wooden floor, a dark wood sideboard, or leather and cognac tones in the textiles.
Brown chairs at a brown table of a slightly different tone tend to fight each other, the same problem as two nearly matching woods. A brown seat on a black frame avoids it, because the frame separates the colour from the table.
Our Sella comes in Latte vegan leather with Chocolate armrests on a black steel frame, and Karin and Erik come in Dark Oak, a deep brown wood. Both suit a natural oak or a black table; at a dark wooden table, choose one clear contrast instead.
What colour chairs go with a stone table?
Warm materials: oak or a warm, soft seat balances a cool stone top, and the colour of the stone decides whether the chairs should contrast with it or echo it.
Stone tops are hard and cool to the eye. A chair in wood or a textured fabric brings back warmth, and a light chair keeps a dark top from looking heavy.
Our Diana table also comes with a Dekton top, a sintered stone, in Grafite, Grigio or Sabbia; the chart gives our suggestions for each, and our dining tables show the range. For an oak table, our guide to chairs for an oak table sets out every finish.

Choose black or a warm neutral for chairs that suit any table, and keep strong colours for the walls and textiles. Prefer greige to cool grey where there is wood, and give a brown seat a black frame or a clear contrast. Choose the fabric for your household first, then the colour, from samples. Every by Crea dining chair is made in our own factory in Sweden, delivered fully assembled and covered by a 10-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
What colour dining chairs are the most versatile?
Black and warm neutrals such as ivory, sand and greige. They suit oak, stone and painted tables and let the rest of the room change around them.
Are beige dining chairs a good idea with children?
Yes, in a wipe-clean vegan leather. Our Ivory and Sand vegan leather cleans with lukewarm water and mild soap; a light woven fabric needs spills blotted at once.
Do black dining chairs make a room look smaller?
Not usually. A slim black frame reads as a line, not a block. In a small, dark room, pair black frames with a light seat or a light table.
What colour chairs go with a grey dining room?
Greige, black or oak. Greige bridges grey walls and the wood in the room, and black gives the chairs a clear outline.
Do you make green dining chairs?
No. Our chairs come in black, warm neutrals, Latte and three oak finishes. In a green room they work as the calm base, with the green on the walls and in the textiles.
Can I see the colours before I buy?
Yes. Order fabric and wood samples and look at them next to your table in daylight and in the evening. A test chair can be returned free within 14 days for comfort or build, but not for colour.
