Black is the colour most outdoor frames are sold in, and for good reasons: it recedes against a hedge, frames teak and stone, and does not turn grubby at the feet. It also has habits worth knowing before you buy: it warms in full sun, and dust and dried rain show on it in low light. This guide covers how black outdoor furniture behaves in sun, dirt and years of weather, what goes with it, and the black chairs, tables, benches, bar stools and loungers we weld in our own factory in Sweden.
Is black garden furniture a good idea?
Yes, for most gardens. A black frame asks the least of you outside: it hides the soil that rain splashes onto the feet, it hides small scuffs, and it goes with almost every seat and top, from teak to grey stone to a pale cushion. It reads as a thin line rather than a block, so a dining set looks lighter on a small terrace.
There are two trade-offs. A dark frame warms in direct sun, and dust, pollen and dried rain show on it in low evening light. Both are easy to manage, and the sections below say how. On very pale paving black stands out rather than blends in; on decking, gravel and lawn it is the safe choice.
Every frame in our garden range is black: welded stainless steel, powder-coated, except the Arvid lounge chair and the outdoor Anton and Leo tables, which are powder-coated steel.
Does black outdoor furniture get hot in the sun?
Yes, warmer than a light colour. Any dark surface takes up more sunlight than a pale one, so a black frame or a dark stone top in full midday sun can feel hot to the hand. We have measured no temperatures, so take this as a rule of thumb, not a figure.
What matters is what you touch. On our furniture you sit on teak, outdoor mesh with a cushion, sintered stone or an olefin cushion, not on bare metal. Wood also feels less hot to the hand than metal. On Signe the armrests are formed from the frame itself, so feel them before you rest an arm on a hot afternoon.
Three habits help: place the dining set where it gets afternoon shade, choose a pale cushion for a south-facing spot, and on a dark top lay place mats at lunch in high summer.
Does black garden furniture show dirt?
It hides some dirt and shows other kinds. Black hides what is dark: soil splashed up by rain, grass marks, scuffs at the feet. It shows what is pale: dust, pollen in early summer, dried rain spots and bird droppings, most of all in low sun.
So a black frame looks clean from across the garden for a long time, and wants a wipe more often than you expect up close. A damp cloth with a little mild soap, then a dry cloth, brings back an even black. Cleaner left to dry leaves a grey film, so rinse it off. No abrasive pads and no solvents: they dull the coat. The full routine is in how to clean garden furniture.
How does black outdoor furniture age?
That depends on what is under the black. A powder coat is a baked layer of colour, and outdoors it chips where furniture gets knocked: the feet, the joints, the edge a chair hits. On plain steel, rust starts at that chip. On stainless steel a chip does not rust through, so it stays a mark you can touch up. Our frames are 1.4306 (304L) stainless, not the marine grade 316, so near the sea rinse salt off now and then. Arvid and the outdoor Anton and Leo tables are powder-coated steel: touch up a chip there before winter.
The materials on the frame age in their own ways, and they change the look of a black piece more than the frame does. More in powder-coated steel and steel or aluminium garden furniture.
How a black piece ages outdoors| Part | Over the years | What to do |
|---|
| Black powder coat on stainless steel | A chip does not rust through | Touch up chips to keep it looking new |
|---|
| Black powder coat on plain steel | Rust can start at a chip | Touch up every chip before winter |
|---|
| Teak | Turns silver-grey within a season | Teak oil once a year keeps the warm brown |
|---|
| Dekton sintered stone | Holds its colour in UV, no frost cracking | Wipe it; it is never sealed |
|---|
| Olefin cushion | Solution-dyed, so the colour runs through the fibre | Lift off, let it dry, store it in winter |
What goes with black garden furniture: teak or stone?
Both, and that is the point of a black frame: it lets you mix. Keep the frame black across the whole terrace and change the seats and tops: teak chairs at the ends of the table, cushioned ones along the sides, a stone bench against the wall. One frame colour makes a mixed set look chosen, not leftover. Our guide to garden furniture sets uses the same rule.
Black frame pairings| Black frame with | Reads as | Suits |
|---|
| Oiled teak | Warm honey brown against black | Wooden decking, green gardens |
|---|
| Weathered teak | Silver-grey and black, calm | Grey paving, gravel, the coast |
|---|
| Grigio Dekton (mid grey) | Cool and neutral | Stone paving and concrete |
|---|
| Sabbia Dekton (sandy beige) | Warm contrast, the lightest top | Sandstone, light gravel, wood |
|---|
| Grafite Dekton (near-black) | All dark and graphic; warms most in sun | Pale paving, white walls |
|---|
| Oat olefin cushion | Soft, pale contrast | Long dinners on a sunny terrace |
Black patio chairs: which outdoor dining chair?
All four of our garden dining chairs have a black frame, a 46 cm seat and stand 79 cm tall, so they mix at one table. Choose by seat and arms:
- [Signe](/products/signe-outdoor-chair-bestseller-black-teak): teak seat and back, armrests, 50 cm wide.
- [Edith](/products/isa-wood-outdoor-chair-black-teak): teak, no arms, 43 cm wide.
- [Elsy](/products/outdoor-chair-elsy-black-frame-oat-cushion): outdoor mesh with an Oat cushion, armrests, 50 cm wide. Sold with a black frame only.
- [Isa](/products/outdoor-chair-isa-black-frame-oat-cushion): mesh with an Oat cushion, no arms, 43 cm wide.
Teak is dry soon after rain; the cushion is the softer seat for a long dinner. For the hour after, Kenny and Arvid are black lounge chairs with a lower, deeper seat. Our guides to comfortable garden chairs and garden chairs compare them in detail.
Black outdoor dining table, coffee table or bench?
A black frame under a stone or teak top: every table and bench we make stands on black. Diana garden is the dining table, rectangular and fixed, 76 cm high. It comes with a Grafite, Grigio or Sabbia Dekton top; choose Grafite if you want an all-black table.
Hedvig and Wilma garden are backless, and we sell no cushions for them; see the garden bench guide and garden table with benches. Low tables are in the outdoor coffee table guide. Indoors, the same choices are in our black dining table guide and black coffee table guide.

Black garden furniture hides soil and scuffs, goes with teak, stone and pale cushions, and warms in direct sun like any dark surface, so sit on teak, mesh or a cushion, not bare metal. Under the black, stainless steel keeps a chip from rusting. Every frame in our garden range is black, welded in Sweden, with a 10-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Does black outdoor furniture get too hot?
A dark frame warms more than a light one in direct sun, so bare metal can feel hot at midday. On ours you sit on teak, mesh, stone or an olefin cushion, not on the frame. Give the set some afternoon shade.
Does black garden furniture show dirt?
It hides soil splashes and scuffs, and shows pale dust, pollen and dried rain in low sun. A damp cloth with mild soap, then a dry cloth.
Does black metal garden furniture rust?
Plain steel can rust where the black coat chips. Stainless steel under the coat does not rust through a chip. Our frames are stainless, except Arvid and the outdoor Anton and Leo tables, which are powder-coated steel.
What colour cushions go with black garden furniture?
Pale ones give the clearest contrast and warm less in sun. Our cushioned chairs and stools, and Kenny, come with Oat, a pale warm off-white in solution-dyed olefin.
Do black frames go with teak?
Yes. Oiled teak reads warm brown against black; left untreated it turns silver-grey, a calmer pairing. Oil it once a year to keep the brown.
Is all your garden furniture black?
Every frame in our garden range is sold in black. The Bazo lounger and the Elsy chair are sold in black only.
