How deep should a bench be?
39 to 40 cm on Wilma and Alva. That is enough to sit and put shoes on without blocking a hall. Deeper benches are lounge seating, not hall seating.
What seat height?
46 cm, the height of a dining chair. It works at a 76 cm table, in a hall and at the end of most beds.
If the bench is only for the end of a bed, its top should sit at or a little below the mattress, so 46 cm suits most frames.
End of a bed: which length?
About the width of the mattress, or a little shorter so the bed frame shows at both ends.
