Bar Stool Footrest Height: Why It Matters and What to Look For

Short answer

40 to 45 cm
Below the seat
21 to 26 cm
Off the floor at a 66 cm seat

As a rule of thumb, a bar stool footrest should sit about 40 to 45 cm below the seat: on a 66 cm counter stool that puts it roughly 21 to 26 cm above the floor, on a 76 cm bar stool roughly 31 to 36 cm. At that height it carries the weight of your legs and, for most adults, keeps the knees comfortably bent.

The footrest is the part of a bar stool that people notice only when it is missing or in the wrong place, and it is often the real reason a stool feels uncomfortable after half an hour. On a high seat your feet cannot reach the floor, so without a footrest the weight of your legs hangs from the front edge of the seat and presses into the backs of your thighs. A footrest at the right height takes that weight and lets you sit with your knees bent at a natural angle. This guide explains the right height in centimetres, what happens when a footrest is too high or too low, the difference between a footrest on the stool and a footrail on the counter, and why the footrest is also usually the part of a stool that wears first.

Why does a bar stool need a footrest?

Because on a high seat your feet cannot reach the floor.

Without a footrest, the weight of your lower legs pulls down on the front edge of the seat, which creates uncomfortable pressure behind the thighs. That is the ache people feel after sitting on a bar stool for a while. A footrest takes the weight and removes the pressure.

A footrest also makes a stool easier and safer to get on and off, and it gives children and shorter adults a step. It is one of the five factors that decide comfort, together with seat height, the seat itself, the backrest and the seat width; our guide to comfortable bar stools covers all five.

What is the right footrest height?

Our planning range is about 40 to 45 cm below the seat, which suits most adults.

Freja with a 66 cm seat: the footrest sits about 24 cm above the floor.

On a 66 cm counter stool that means a footrest roughly 21 to 26 cm above the floor; on a 76 cm bar stool, roughly 31 to 36 cm. On Freja with a 66 cm seat, the footrest sits about 24 cm above the floor.

In our experience, at that height most adults' knees bend at a comfortable angle and the thighs rest level on the seat. Taller people use the lower end of the drop comfortably; shorter people appreciate a footrest nearer the top of the range. The table gives the ranges for both standard seat heights.

What happens if the footrest is too high or too low?

Too high and your knees fold up towards your chest, which most people find tiring over a long meal.

Too low and your feet dangle or stretch for it, which brings back the pressure on the thighs the footrest was supposed to remove. Both make a stool feel uncomfortable even when the seat height is right.

A common cause is a stool that is the wrong height for the counter: a 76 cm bar stool at a counter-height island puts the footrest where it was designed to be, but the seat is too high, so people lean forward to reach the counter. Getting the seat height right first keeps the footrest in the right place. See the bar stool height guide.

Footrest on the stool or footrail on the counter?

Either works, but a footrest on the stool is the one designed for the height of that seat.

A footrail fixed to the counter or island suits bars and restaurants, where stools are moved around and guests of all heights sit; at home, it is an extra, not a replacement.

If your island has a footrail, check its height against the stool: it should fall roughly 40 to 45 cm below the seat. Every by Crea stool has its own footrest or footrail built into the frame, so it works at any counter of the right height.

Why is the footrest the first part of a stool to wear?

Because shoes rest on it, push off it and scrape it every day.

Powder coating is baked onto the frame, so the footrest resists daily shoe contact.
Powder coating is baked onto the frame, so the footrest resists daily shoe contact.

On a painted stool, the footrest is where chips appear first; on a wooden stool, it is where the lacquer wears through. A durable finish on the footrest is a good sign of a well-made stool.

Our steel frames are powder-coated, which is baked on and generally harder-wearing than paint, and our oak stools are lacquered to seal the wood. In our experience, both hold up to daily shoe contact better than wet paint. Read more in our guide to powder-coated steel.

What about children and shorter adults?

A footrest matters even more for them, because their feet are further from the floor.

A stool whose footrest sits near the top of the 40 to 45 cm range, and a backrest, make a high seat feel secure. For a counter that is higher than standard, a custom seat height is often a better answer than a taller stool.

For small children, a stool with four legs, a footrest and a backrest is usually the most stable combination, and a high load rating helps when a child climbs up from the front. All our stools carry a 200 kg load rating. See backrest vs backless stools for more on choosing for families.

Footrest height in brief

Look for a footrest about 40 to 45 cm below the seat: around 21 to 26 cm above the floor on a 66 cm counter stool, and 31 to 36 cm on a 76 cm bar stool. Get the seat height right first, prefer a footrest built into the stool, and choose a hard-wearing finish. Every by Crea stool has a built-in footrest, is made in our own factory in Malmö, Sweden, and is covered by a 10-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How high should the footrest be on a bar stool?

About 40 to 45 cm below the seat: roughly 21 to 26 cm above the floor on a 66 cm stool, or 31 to 36 cm on a 76 cm stool.

Do bar stools need a footrest?

Yes, for comfort. Without one, the weight of your legs presses the seat edge into your thighs. A footrest takes that weight.

How high is the footrest on Freja?

About 24 cm above the floor on the 66 cm seat, which is 42 cm below the seat.

Is a counter footrail as good as a footrest?

It can be, if it sits about 40 to 45 cm below the seat. A footrest on the stool is designed for that stool's seat height.

Why do my legs ache on a bar stool?

Usually because the footrest is missing, too low, or the stool is too high for the counter. Check the seat height first.

Do your bar stools have footrests?

Yes. Every by Crea bar stool has a footrest or footrail built into the frame.
