Accent Chair Colours: Which Colour Chair Goes With a Grey, Beige or Brown Sofa?
By Alexandra PetterssonReviewed by Alexander TjernströmUpdated
Short answer
Grey sofa
ivory, greige or black
Beige sofa
black or dark wood
Brown sofa
ivory or greige
With a grey sofa, an ivory or greige armchair warms it and a black one sharpens it. With a beige or cream sofa, choose black or dark wood for contrast, or ivory for a calm, tonal room; with a brown sofa, ivory or greige lightens it. Keep the chair one clear step lighter or darker than the sofa, and bring green or terracotta in through cushions, a rug or the wall if you are not sure.
Most people choose an armchair after the sofa, so the real question is rarely which colour in general. It is which colour next to that grey, beige or brown sofa, in that room. This guide goes colour by colour: what an ivory, greige, black or wood-toned chair does beside the common sofa colours, whether a neutral or a coloured chair is the better buy, when green or terracotta is worth it, and how the frame changes the colour. Whether the chair should match the sofa at all is covered in our guide to matching an armchair to the sofa. The examples use our own armchairs, Kent and Einar.
Which colour accent chair goes with a grey, beige or brown sofa?
Grey takes a warm ivory or greige to soften it, or black to sharpen it; beige and cream take black or dark wood for contrast; brown takes ivory or greige to lighten it.
The rule behind all three is the same: choose a chair one clear step lighter or darker than the sofa. A shade that is almost the same tends to look like a near miss; a clear step looks chosen.
The chart below starts from the chair rather than the sofa: what each of our colours does and which sofas it suits. For more sofa colours, including black, blue and green, see should an armchair match the sofa.

Is a neutral or a coloured armchair the better buy?
For most rooms a neutral: an ivory, greige or black armchair works with the sofa you have now and with the next one, while a strongly coloured chair ties you to one scheme.
An armchair often stays longer than the sofa, the curtains or the rug. A neutral chair lets those change around it. A coloured chair makes a stronger first impression, and it has to keep agreeing with everything you add later.
That is why we upholster our armchairs in neutrals: Dolly bouclé in Ivory, Greige and Black, Valencia vegan leather in Ivory and Jade Black, and Matteo velvet in Jade Black. Greige and Ivory are the colours our customers choose most.
When does a green, terracotta or other coloured armchair work?
When the colour appears at least once more in the room, in a cushion, a rug, a painting or plants, so the chair looks like part of a scheme rather than an island.
Green sits easily with oak, black and warm neutrals, which is why it is chosen so often; terracotta and rust warm a grey or beige room. A bold chair works best as the only strong colour in the seating group, with the sofa kept calm.
We make no green, terracotta or blue armchairs. If you want the colour without committing the chair to it, put it on the wall behind a neutral chair, or in a cushion and a throw you can change with the seasons.
Does a black armchair suit a light room?
Yes: a black armchair gives a pale room an outline, as long as the frame is slim and the floor shows underneath, so it reads as a drawing rather than a block.
Black works especially well beside a beige, cream or light grey sofa, and it forgives the marks that show first on a pale fabric. In a small room a bulky black chair can feel heavy; an open frame avoids that.
Yes, if the fabric is chosen for it: ivory vegan leather wipes clean, and a looped bouclé hides the everyday wear that shows first on a flat, pale fabric.
A light chair brightens a corner and sits well beside a grey, brown or black sofa. What makes a pale chair hard work is a flat, absorbent fabric in a busy room.
Our Ivory Valencia vegan leather carries the PERMABLOK3 easy-clean finish, which makes Kent in Ivory vegan leather a light armchair a family can keep clean. Ivory Dolly bouclé is claw-tested to BS 8479. Our guide to cleaning an armchair covers each fabric.
Beige, greige or brown: which warm neutral should you choose?
Greige, a grey-beige, is the safest: it sits between cool and warm and works with almost any sofa. Beige is warmer and suits wooden floors; brown is often best brought in through the wood of the frame.
Dark Oak brings the brown, Ivory bouclé keeps it light.
A clear beige can look yellow next to a cool grey sofa, which greige avoids. A large chair in brown fabric can feel heavy, while a brown frame gives the warmth without the weight.
Einar in oak with Greige bouclé is our warm-neutral chair. For brown, Einar in Dark Oak has a tobacco-brown stain under a matte lacquer, here with Ivory bouclé for contrast.
Does the frame change the colour of an armchair?
Yes: the frame is the outline of the chair, so a black frame makes any fabric look sharper and a wooden or light frame makes it look softer.
Ivory cushions in a black frame read as graphic; the same cushions in natural oak read as calm and Scandinavian. That gives you two decisions instead of one, and more ways to tie the chair to the room.
Kent comes in black as standard and in Beige, White or Taupe through Design Your Own; Einar comes in Oak, Dark Oak or Black Oak. Order fabric samples and wood samples and look at them beside your sofa in daylight and in the evening. Whether the frame should match your other wood is covered in oak or steel armchair.
Accent chair colours in three rules
1 step
lighter or darker than the sofa, never almost the same.
Neutral
chair, with colour in cushions, rugs and walls.
Frame
is part of the colour: black sharpens, wood softens.
Choose a chair one clear step lighter or darker than the sofa: ivory or greige beside grey or brown, black or dark wood beside beige. Keep the chair neutral and let cushions, rugs and walls carry green or terracotta. Remember that the frame is part of the colour. Kent and Einar are made in our own factory in Sweden, delivered fully assembled and covered by a 10-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
What colour accent chair goes with a brown leather sofa?
Ivory or greige, which lighten the brown and keep the room warm. Black works too in a light room. A chair in a similar brown tends to merge with the sofa.
What colour accent chair goes with a black sofa?
Ivory for a clear contrast, or greige if you want it softer. A natural oak frame adds warmth beside black.
Do you make a green or terracotta armchair?
No. Our armchairs come in Ivory, Greige and Black bouclé, Ivory and Jade Black vegan leather, and Jade Black velvet. Bring green or terracotta in through a cushion, a throw, the wall or plants.
What is greige?
A grey-beige that sits between cool and warm tones, which is why it works beside both grey and beige sofas. Our Dolly bouclé comes in Greige on Kent and Einar.
Which armchair colour hides dirt best?
Black or another dark colour, or a textured bouclé in any colour. On a light chair, vegan leather is the easiest to keep clean, because spills wipe off.
Can I see the colours before ordering?
Yes. Order fabric and wood samples and look at them beside your sofa in daylight and lamplight. After delivery, you have 14 days to request a return, provided the armchair is unused and in its original condition.
