Pool Lounge Chairs: Teak, Stainless Steel and Olefin That Take Chlorine, Salt and Sun

Short answer

Surface
teak slats
Frame

Cushion
rated for pool and sea water

By a pool, choose teak slats that drain, a stainless steel frame that does not rust through a chip, and a cushion fabric rated for pool and sea water. Bazo is all three: 79 x 196 cm, on two wheels to follow the sun. Rinse off chlorine and salt with fresh water now and then.

Sun Lounger Bazo with a black frame and teak slats, three-quarter view

A pool is the hardest place a lounger can stand. Chlorinated or salt water splashes onto it every day, wet towels lie on it, and the sun dries it hard in between. What lasts there is a short list: wood that sheds water, steel that cannot rust where the paint is knocked, and fabric dyed right through the fibre. This guide covers the materials, how much space a pool lounger takes, and the little care that keeps it right for years.

What are the best pool lounge chairs made of?

Teak slats on a stainless steel frame, with a solution-dyed olefin cushion. Each part answers one thing a pool does to furniture.

Teak keeps water out with its own natural oils, and slats let splashes run straight through, so the lying surface is dry soon after a swim. Ours is A-grade plantation teak, bought as FSC-certified timber.

On cheap loungers, the joints and the frame are what fail. Pool water finds every chip in the paint, and on plain painted steel that is where rust starts. Bazo is welded from stainless steel and powder-coated black, so a knock in the coat does not rust through, and there are no exposed bolts to loosen.

Aluminium and plastic loungers are lighter to carry, and lighter in a gust of wind too. We make neither: our only lounger is teak on stainless steel.

Will chlorine and salt water damage the lounger?

Not if you rinse it now and then. Splash it down with fresh water after a busy pool week, or after a day of salt water, and let it dry in the sun.

The cushion is the part people worry about, and it is the part tested for it. The Sunproof Fontelina olefin on Bazo is rated 4 to 5 for colour fastness to pool and sea water: chlorine and salt do not strip the colour. It has also been tested to 1,500 hours of weathering. Water beads off and it dries fast, so a wet swimsuit is not a problem. See our guide to outdoor cushions for cleaning.

How much space does a pool lounger need?

Bazo lies at 79 x 196 cm. Plan for that footprint plus a clear path along the pool edge, where people walk with wet feet.

Turn the loungers towards the afternoon sun. A low table between two loungers is covered in our outdoor side table guide.

Two side by sideTwo widths plus a small table between them, so each person has a place for a glass

Wheels, height and moving it

Bazo has two wheels at the head end. Lift the foot end and roll it to follow the sun, into the shade, or out of the way when the pool is cleaned.

It is low: 33 cm to the slats lying flat. If getting up from a low seat is hard, a lounge chair such as Kenny, with a seat at 38 to 48 cm and arms, is easier to rise from.

Single lounger or day bed?

Both have teak on a black frame, and both are in our sun loungers. The single lounger has the backrest in four positions and a full-length Oat cushion included.

Cushion or bare teak by the pool?

Bare teak for quick swims: it stays cool on a hot day and is fine for a break between dips. The full-length cushion, included with Bazo, is for the long afternoon.

Lift the cushion in for long rain and over winter. The fabric copes; the foam inside lasts longer dry. The cover lifts off for washing.

Care through the season

Rinse off chlorine and salt with fresh water now and then. Leave the teak untreated and it weathers to silver-grey, or oil it once a year for the honey tone; our teak care guide has the routine. Wipe the frame with a damp cloth in spring.

The frame and teak can stay out all year. In autumn, lift the cushion in and keep the feet off standing water: our guide to garden furniture in winter covers the rest.
