A modern dining chair is usually defined by clean lines, a slim frame that shows how it is built, in steel or solid wood, and a few honest materials, often a black steel frame with an upholstered seat. To choose one that still looks right in ten or twenty years, avoid trend colours and exaggerated shapes, and check the joints, the seat and the warranty: a welded or properly jointed frame with a replaceable seat outlasts the fashion it was bought in.
Modern is the word most people use when they look for dining chairs, and it covers a lot: a steel chair from the 1920s and a chair designed last year can both be called modern. This guide explains what makes a dining chair look modern, how modern differs from contemporary and Scandinavian, which materials look current and age well, which designs date quickly, whether modern chairs are comfortable, how to tell if one will last, and which of our chairs suit a modern room. The examples are our own chairs, designed and made in Sweden.
What makes a dining chair modern?
Clean lines, a slim frame that shows how the chair is built, and a short list of honest materials; decoration gives way to proportion and structure.
Modern furniture grew out of early 20th-century modernism, when designers used tubular and bent steel to make chairs lighter and simpler. The idea stuck: a chair should look like what it is, and nothing should be added for show.
In practice, a modern dining chair today usually has thin legs, a seat and back that read as separate shapes, and one or two materials, often black steel with an upholstered seat, or solid wood with a sculpted seat.
What is the difference between modern, contemporary and Scandinavian dining chairs?
Modern usually means the clean-lined style that grew out of 20th-century modernism; contemporary means what is being designed now; Scandinavian is the Nordic branch of modern design, with more wood and warmth.
In shops the words overlap, and most chairs sold as modern today are contemporary designs in a modern spirit. What matters more than the label is whether the lines are calm and the materials real.
Our chairs sit where the three meet: slim welded steel from modernism, solid oak from the Scandinavian tradition, designed in Sweden today. Our guides to Scandinavian dining chairs and to mid-century and Scandinavian design go deeper into each style.
Which materials look modern and still age well?
Powder-coated steel, solid oak and hard-wearing upholstery such as vegan leather, velvet and bouclé; printed films and thin veneers look modern for a year or two and then show their wear.
A material ages well when wear makes it look used rather than broken. Solid oak can be sanded and refinished, a welded steel frame has no screws to work loose, and a good fabric is rated for many years of rubbing.

Which dining chair designs date quickly?
In our view, chairs date fastest when they are built around a trend: a colour of the season, a shape exaggerated to stand out in a photograph, or a cheap surface made to look like a better material.
A trend colour ties the chair to the year it was bought. An exaggerated shape is often less comfortable too, because it was drawn for the look first. Imitation surfaces, such as a film printed with wood grain, wear through at the edges and cannot be repaired.
The safer route is a calm shape in a neutral colour, with a seat you can change later: a new seat fabric updates the chair without replacing the frame. Our guide to dining chair colours covers the colours that last.
Are modern dining chairs comfortable?
Good ones are: a slim chair can be as comfortable as a heavy one if the seat height, the seat and the backrest are right.
The risk with a minimal chair is that comfort is cut along with the bulk. Sit in it for an hour, not a minute, and check that the backrest meets your lower back.
Our Isabell has a backrest upholstered to full height, and Sella adds armrests and a seat that appears to float inside its frame; both seats use cold-cure foam. Karin and Erik have a two-piece oak seat inclined gently towards the centre. Our guide to comfortable dining chairs explains what to check.

How do you know a modern dining chair will last?
Check the joints, the frame material, the load rating and the warranty, and ask whether seats and spare parts can be bought later; a chair that can be repaired outlasts the fashion it was bought in.
Modern chairs are often slim, so their joints carry more of the load. A welded steel frame or a jointed solid oak frame copes with that; a frame screwed together from thin parts can loosen.
Every by Crea dining chair is rated for 200 kg and covered by a 10-year warranty, and seats and spare parts stay available long after purchase. Sella was assessed by RISE as meeting EN 16139, the European standard for non-domestic seating, at Level 2, and Isabell at Level 1. Our guide to choosing quality dining chairs has the full checklist.
Which by Crea chairs suit a modern dining room?
All five have modern lines: the steel chairs read as the most graphic, the oak chairs as the warmest, and Black Oak brings the two together.
For a modern look in wood, choose Karin or Erik in Black Oak with Black bouclé; for warmth with steel, an Ivory or Sand seat on a black frame. The chart sets out the modern detail of each chair and where it works best.
replaceable, so a new fabric never means a new chair.
Look for clean lines, a slim frame and honest materials, and leave trend colours and exaggerated shapes to the photographs. Sit in the chair for an hour. Check the joints, the load rating, the warranty and whether the seat can be replaced. Every by Crea dining chair is designed in Sweden, made in our own factory in Sweden, delivered fully assembled and covered by a 10-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
What is a modern dining chair?
A chair with clean lines, a slim frame that shows how it is built and a few honest materials, often black steel with an upholstered seat, or sculpted solid wood.
What is the difference between modern and contemporary dining chairs?
Modern usually means the style that grew out of 20th-century modernism; contemporary means what is designed now. Most chairs sold as modern today are contemporary designs in a modern spirit.
Which modern dining chairs will not date?
Calm shapes in neutral colours, made from real materials such as solid oak and welded steel, with a seat you can replace when the fabric wears or your taste changes.
Do modern dining chairs work as kitchen chairs?
Yes, if the seat wipes clean and the chair is light to move. Our Bella and Isabell weigh 6 kg, and our vegan leather wipes clean with lukewarm water and mild soap.
Are modern dining chairs comfortable?
Good ones are. Check the seat height against your table, a firm seat and a backrest that meets your lower back, and sit in the chair for an hour before you buy a set.
How long should a modern dining chair last?
A well-made one should outlast its warranty by a wide margin. Ours carry a 10-year warranty, and seats and spare parts are sold separately, so a worn part never means a new chair.
