Bouclé Bar Stools: Are They Practical, and How Do You Care for Them?

Yes, with sensible care and the right colour. A good bouclé is hard-wearing: ours is rated for 50,000 Martindale rubs, well above the level usually recommended for heavy domestic use. Its loops hide crumbs better than a flat weave, and its texture forgives small marks that would show on a smooth surface.

What bouclé does not like is rubbing: a stain rubbed into the loops spreads and can pull the yarn. Blot instead, and it stays looking good for years. Durable enough for daily kitchen use, when it is a quality fabric. Our bouclé is rated for 50,000 Martindale rubs, is OEKO-TEX certified for harmful substances, and has been tested for resistance to pet claws under BS 8479, so a cat or dog climbing up is less likely to pull the loops.

The table sets out what those figures mean. The seat is upholstered by hand over cold-cut foam at 55 kg/m³, so it keeps its shape as well as its surface.

Vacuum it regularly with an upholstery nozzle to lift crumbs and dust from the loops. For spills, blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in; never rub. For a mark that remains, dab with a cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, then blot dry. Test any method on a hidden area first.

Choose greige for a family kitchen: it hides everyday marks and suits both black steel and oak. Choose ivory for the lightest, softest look in a kitchen used a little more gently, where it brightens a black frame or a dark stone island. Dark colours always forgive more than light ones.

Ivory bouclé on a black steel frame is one of our most chosen combinations for marble islands, where the ivory echoes the stone. Greige on dark oak, as on Ted, is warmer and more forgiving. Free fabric samples are the best way to see how each looks in your own light.
