Colour comes second. A black, white or oak table can all be modern if the shape is quiet.
What makes a modern bedside table modern?
Three things. A plain outline where the shape is the decoration: no carving, no moulding, no curly handle. Materials you can name, such as powder-coated steel, solid oak or Dekton sintered stone, not a printed foil pretending to be one of them. And a light footprint: slim legs, one pedestal or no legs at all, so the table does not sit on the floor like a box.
Which of our bedside tables is the most modern?
All three pass the tests, each in a different way.
Iris is the modern bedside table for people who want a drawer. Lisa is the most minimal. Affe is the softest, a round shape among straight lines.
| Table | What makes it modern | Storage | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iris | Frame in black, white or beige; top in laminate or Dekton sintered stone; a vegan leather strap and a knob | One drawer | 64 cm high, 40 x 35 cm |
| Lisa | No legs: solid oak top on a welded steel frame, screwed to the wall | Two vegan leather straps for magazines | 30 x 31 cm, at your height |
| Affe | One turned solid oak column, top and base in the same finish | None | 59 cm high, ø30 cm top |
Modern, mid-century or Scandinavian?
They overlap, and the words get used loosely. Mid-century usually means the post-war look: warm wood, tapered legs, rounded drawer fronts. Scandinavian means light, calm and practical, often pale oak. Modern is plainer still, and it mixes materials: steel with stone, oak with black.
In a bedroom they mix well when one thing repeats, such as the oak finish or the black frame. Our guide to mid-century and Scandinavian furniture goes through the differences.
Is a floating bedside table modern?
It is the most modern form: a top and nothing under it. Lisa screws to the wall at the height you choose, ideally level with the top of your mattress or up to about 5 cm above. The floor under it stays clear, which makes a small bedroom read larger.
The trade-off is a drill and the right fixings for your wall. The floating bedside table guide covers both.
Which colours and materials look modern?
Black reads graphic and modern against a pale wall: Iris with a black frame and top, or Lisa and Affe in black oak, where the grain still shows. White disappears into a white room. Beige is the soft middle.
For the top, Dekton sintered stone on Iris takes heat and water rings; laminate gives a flat black or white. Oak brings warmth that paint does not. Matching or contrasting the bed frame matters more than the colour itself: see white or black bedside table and oak bedside table.
Does a modern bedside table need a drawer?
Not for the look, but most bedrooms need somewhere for glasses, chargers and hand cream. An empty-looking modern table only stays empty if the clutter has a home.
Iris has one drawer, fitted and running on delivery. Lisa's straps take a paperback or a magazine. Affe has no storage at all, for the bedroom that is already tidy. None of ours has a built-in charger or outlet: run the cable behind the table to a wall socket.
