What is the best material for a dining chair frame?

Solid hardwood, such as oak, and welded steel make the most durable frames; veneered board and weak joints are where cheaper chairs fail.

Solid wood can be sanded, repaired and refinished; board covered in veneer cannot, and its screws lose their grip over time. Steel is only as good as its joints, so a frame welded into one piece outlasts one bolted together.

How long should a good dining chair last?

A well-made dining chair is built to outlast its warranty by a wide margin, with a frame that outlives several seats.

What wears out on a chair is the fabric and the foam, long before a good frame. That is why the question to ask is not only how long the chair lasts, but whether its worn parts can be replaced.

What should a dining chair warranty cover?

The frame and its joints, for years rather than months; a long warranty is the maker's own estimate of how long the chair will last.

Read what the warranty covers as well as how long it runs. A frame warranty says something about the construction; a fabric warranty from the fabric maker says something about the upholstery.
