Match the table top to the sofa seat, or sit 2 to 5 cm lower. Most sofas land at 40 to 45 cm. Our tables run 41.5 to 52.5 cm.

Coffee table height is the measurement that decides whether a cup sits in easy reach or you lean into empty air. The usual mistake is buying by looks and discovering the top sits above the sofa cushions, which turns every drink into a shoulder shrug. The rule is simple and it holds in living rooms in Britain, the United States, Germany, France and Sweden: the table top should meet the sofa seat, or sit a few centimetres below it. This guide gives that rule in centimetres, the height of every Anton and Leo size we make, and which size to pick for a low sofa, a deep sofa, or a nest. Every table named is made in our own factory in Sweden. Tops are sintered stone, not marble.

How tall should a coffee table be?

Level with the sofa seat, or 2 to 5 cm below it.

Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion with nobody sitting on it. That number is your target table height. A table 2 to 5 cm lower still works, because you reach slightly down to a cup; a table more than about 5 cm above the seat forces your elbow up.

Most European and American sofas sit between 40 and 45 cm. That is why the useful coffee-table range is roughly 40 to 48 cm, and why a 55 cm table next to a 42 cm sofa feels like a desk.

What height are by Crea coffee tables?

Anton runs 41.5, 43.5 and 47.5 cm. Leo runs 42.5, 47.5 and 52.5 cm. Each size has its own height so a nest can stack.

Heights come from the dimension drawings, measured to the top of the stone or oak.

Which height for a standard sofa?

For a sofa seat of 40 to 45 cm, choose Anton Small or Medium (41.5 or 43.5 cm) or Leo Small (42.5 cm).

Those three sit in the same band as the seat, so a cup on the table is where your hand already is. Anton Large at 47.5 cm still works beside a 45 cm sofa (2.5 cm above the seat, inside the 5 cm band). It is a stretch beside a 40 cm sofa.

Leo Large at 52.5 cm is the odd one out. It is closer to a low lounge table than to a classic coffee table. Use it as the outer, taller piece in a nest, or beside a high-backed, high-seat sofa. Do not put it alone next to a low lounge sofa and expect the rule of thumb to hold.

How do nesting tables change the height choice?

A nest gives you more than one height on purpose.

Anton nests fully: the smaller rectangle slides under the larger, so the set stores on one footprint and you live with the taller top until you pull the smaller one out. Leo is round and the tops overlap by about 40 percent rather than disappearing, because each size stands at a different height.

If the sofa is low, make the table you leave out the small or medium. Keep the large for guests. If you want one surface most days, buy the size that matches the sofa and skip the set. The nest page covers footprint; this page is only height.

Should a coffee table be lower than the sofa?

Slightly lower is comfortable. Much lower is a stretch. Higher than the seat is the usual failure.

2 to 5 cm below the seat still lets you set a mug down without leaning. More than about 8 cm below and you are reaching into a hole, which is tiring in a long evening. Above the seat, the table starts to block the sofa visually and your forearm sits at an awkward angle.

Cushions compress when you sit, so measure the empty seat, then remember you will sit 2 to 3 cm lower. A table that looked 1 cm high on paper can feel right once you are in the sofa.

Coffee table height vs dining table height

They are not interchangeable.

A dining table here is 76 cm. A coffee table is 41.5 to 52.5 cm. Using a dining height in front of a sofa puts the top at chest height. Using a coffee table at a dining chair leaves the plate in your lap.

If the room has to work as both, you need two pieces, not one compromise height. Our dining table height belongs with the dining chairs, not with this guide.

Measure it. That is the target table height.
Anton Small / Medium
41.5 and 43.5 cm for most sofas.
Leo Large
52.5 cm: nest outer, or a high seat only.

Measure the sofa seat. Aim for the same height, or 2 to 5 cm lower. Pick Anton Small or Medium, or Leo Small, for a 40 to 45 cm sofa; keep Leo Large for a nest or a high seat. Every Anton and Leo table is welded and finished in our factory in Sweden, with a 10-year warranty, and the stone tops are sintered stone, not marble.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a coffee table be?

Level with the sofa seat, or 2 to 5 cm lower. For a typical 40 to 45 cm sofa that means a table around 40 to 48 cm.

How tall is a standard coffee table?

Most sit between 40 and 48 cm. Ours run from 41.5 cm (Anton Small) to 52.5 cm (Leo Large).

How high should a coffee table be next to a sofa?

Match the seat height. Anton Medium at 43.5 cm sits in the middle of a 40 to 45 cm sofa band.

Is 50 cm too tall for a coffee table?

Beside a 40 cm sofa, yes. Beside a 48 cm seat, 50 cm is close. Leo Large is 52.5 cm and is the tall piece in a nest, not the default single table.

Do nesting coffee tables have different heights?

Yes. Each Anton and Leo size has its own height so the smaller table can sit under or overlap the larger one.

Are your coffee tables the same height as dining tables?

No. Dining tables are 76 cm. Coffee tables are 41.5 to 52.5 cm. Use each at the surface it was made for.
